Racial Tension

The Illusion of our Differences is BlindingRacial Tension

As the racial tensions rise by the second in our world, I am reminded at just how preposterous the idea of prejudice based on skin color really is.
Stephen Kavalkovich

By Stephen Kavalkovich, Former Paramedic

Regardless of what the external appearance reveals, some things are universal in all of us. When Nicole Brown and Ron Goldman were brutally stabbed on that June evening of 1994, the blood that covered the scene was red. The same is true when the Notorious B.I.G. was fatally attacked on a public street. The color was red and the components of that blood were the same components that run through every human that has ever walked the planet. The same is true for the waste products that every man, woman, and child excrete daily regardless of the pigmentation of their outermost organ. I imagine you are reading this and ponder where I am going?

The Illusion of our Differences is Blinding Click to Tweet

I am going to place myself under the microscope for a few sentences to make the thoughts shared here of myself only. I grew up in a middle class suburb of Philadelphia, only 4 miles from the notorious Camden, NJ. Camden is known for Campbell’s soup and also as one of the most dangerous cities in the United States, riddled with drugs and crime on every corner. However, I can name three children from my elementary school that were black and perhaps my childhood innocence kept me from seeing them as any different than the majority of my classmates. Little did I know that I would soon learn that the world was bigger and more diverse than my tiny bubble.

opportunity

My father got assigned a new job opportunity in the south. My 6th grade year began as student in a classroom in Franklin, TN, ten miles south of Nashville. This town held the dark history of being where the bloodiest battle of the Civil War was fought. My school was probably 75% black and still used paddling as punishment. The Taurus station wagon we drove to our new home might as well have been a Delorean, as we were transported to a place in America’s past. Mrs Johnson’s homeroom was where my twin Joe and I were brought, and we sat waiting the other kids to arrive. Suddenly, the door opened, and as one dark skinned child after another filed in, I was admittedly intimidated as I knew I might not be in Kansas anymore. I took a breath and shockingly to me, each young male came and introduced himself and told me they would be happy to help us become comfortable in our new school and home. There were no white jokes or threatening to steal my money. Just genuine kindness was offered to us, the new kids from up North. I count it as a blessing today to have had this experience, because at a young age, I was able to learn that all people speak a universal language of kindness and respect regardless of our differences.

Tennessee

We spent a few years living in Tennessee, and I became close with many kids there.  Never once did I consider anyone different from me regardless of whether they lived in the projects or in the fanciest mansions in town. That 6th grade year, I got into my first and only fight at that school with a black kid named William, who beat my ass for putting my hands on him first. When the principal brought us into her office, she demanded we shake hands and get along. We did and remained friends for the remaining years I spent living in Tennessee. I never blamed all black people for my deserved ass kicking, instead however, I blamed myself for starting a fight with another kid, not another “black” kid.

Paramedic

As I look back on my life as a paramedic, I saw people of all races and nationalities get into car wrecks, overdose, have strokes, and deliver babies. They all died of the same type of injuries and woke up after glucose boost from low blood sugar attacks. My experience at the 9/11 ground zero rescue operation taught me that the victims were from every walk of life. Rich, poor, young, old, black, white, and everywhere in between. The folks that volunteered in the rescue efforts had the same things in common as the victims…we were all humans. I believe that on that day our perceived “differences’ melted away in the interest of that deeply ingrained desire to connect, comfort, and love each other. While that gives me a nice warm feeling, it also makes me angry that oftentimes it takes massive tragedy to look with our human vision instead of our ethical/prejudicial/judgmental thick, dirty, and broken, clouded glasses.

When our military people go into battle, they are one unit and not divided by race or other factors. We, as a nation, who desire peace and security would never tolerate a divided armed forces. So, tell me. Why do we tolerate and even desire to have such divisions in our schools, towns, and workplaces? Every day, we fight for our lives, our livelihoods, careers, children, and basic human rights. We fight to put food on the table and fight diseases at the same hospitals, yet we somehow view those that don’t look like us as being different. I laugh when I read a news article that says that, “So and so dies of ‘cardiac arrest’.” Newsflash, that is how every human being dies. The truth is that none of us are getting out of this game alive. I believe that if we start recognizing that we all breathe, bleed, live, and die the same, perhaps the prejudice that blinds and divided us could melt away and healing that lasts could be born. Each man and woman has their own struggle and that is universal, so let’s build bridges and never walls.

Lynched

Noun 1) lynch mob – a mob that kills/ shames/ smears persons and or business for some presumed offense without legal authority

Lynched

The number of violent acts against African Americans accelerated during the first quarter of the twentieth century.
Robert Henslee

Robert Henslee SFYB Founder

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) began compiling lynching statistics in 1912, thirty years after the Chicago Tribune and twenty years after the Tuskegee Institute started tracking such crimes.

In November 1922, the NAACP ran full page ads in newspapers pressing for the passage of the Dyer Anti-Lynching Bill. Entitled “The Shame of America,” the ad laid out the shocking statistics of lynching from 1899 through 1922.

The bill was passed by a two-to-one majority in the House of Representatives but was defeated in the Senate. A few years later, the NAACP issued the statistics as a broadside. Entitled “For the Good of America,” it encouraged citizens to “aid the organization which has been fighting for ten years to wipe out our shame.”

GLC 6197 p.1. National Association for the Advnacement of Colored People. Broadside: For the Good of America, circa 1922-1939. (The Gilder Lehrman Collection, courtesy of The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History. Not to be reproduced without written permission.)

Soon there after law enforcement started arresting and convicting the lynching crews who attacked civilians and businesses. It was just matter of time before mobs made a mistake and lynched/attacked the innocent.

Their toxic poison destroyed many good families and organizations. A few law abiding citizens were so afraid of being targeted by these lynching crews they committed suicide. Resulting in these bullies being charged with murder and they themselves were put to death by the government as a result of their own stupidity.

Yes lynch mobs were a very sad part of our past hence everyone is entitled to due process.

historypic2

History has taught us great evil lives behind the self proclaimed good cause of bullies/mobs.
Food for thought. I’ve gotten many calls recently asking “Who’s Side Are You On”? Well…..
My answer is simple. I’m an American… A Vietnam Vet. History taught us lynch mobs/bullies…. no matter what the cause… is just plain wrong. I will not share or participate in their cause. Life’s too short.

George Michael: His Decades Addiction Fueled by Grief

George
“Grief can be dealt with early in one’s life and better coping mechanisms set up for the unconscious mind to reference leading to a healthier and more emotionally fulfilling life.”
hitreset

Randolph Adair SFYB Staff Reporter

Super Star George Michael’s passing was such a shock to the pop culture world. His creative talent and force left indelibly sealed by MTV as his videos were at the height when video iconography reigned in the late 80’s and 90’s .

What was shared on the video screen was the projection of confidence and smoldering sex appeal. But what was underneath, inside his mind, was a battle with depression for over 2 decades.

MAIN-george-elton-main

The death of his first love, Anselmo Feleppa and later his mother, Lesley, plunged him into a deep depression. He told the Independent, “I struggled with huge depression after my mother died. Losing your mother and your lover in the space of three years is a tough one.”

Feleppa died in 1993 and Michael coped with the death by smoking as many as 23 marijuana joints in a day and throwing himself in this music, said the Mirror.

He also turned to Prozac as he was devastated when his mother died in 1997.

Recently it’s been brought to light that the pop star battled a “spiraling” heroin addiction, according to a UK media outlet.

An unnamed source has told The Telegraph newspaper that the pop legend had been battling addiction over the past year and had been treated in a hospital for an overdose.

My writing here is strictly a review of others accounts and in no way makes any judgement regarding Michael. It’s a gleaning from his own words, reports and evidences of his life.

grief 2

Grief, emotional pain, deep betrayal; when they happen to us, our mind tries to find a way to deal with it, rationalize it. To do this the mind will send emotions to a body part/organ which then develops into a somatization or possibly a dis-ease. We will also develop a coping mechanism, mostly selected from learned modeling and emotional imprinting from our family and those who raised and influenced us.

Many times, clients will say they have dealt with the grief. That they have been to therapy and understand it better. They have pushed it away, out of site out of mind, they don’t think about it. They will say, “I don’t need any help with that, I will figure it out on my own.”

OR, they will say they don’t want to forget because it’s a reminder of what happened and how they will never ever let it happen again. Only, it happens again, and again and again. Because it’s an emotional coping pattern they have reinforced in their lives that the unconscious feels will make them safe. Right or Wrong, Good or Bad, that program has been installed and they will repeat it.

But understanding it better, pushing it away, not thinking about it, figuring it out on our own, or keeping it as a reminder does nothing to change it or transform it.

With my clients I take the past, their old memories, release the troubling memory in a loving safe way, and replace it with what they do want in their lives.

Michael slid into depression as his coping skill after his lover died and into even deeper depression when his mother died later. It snowballed.

Daily Prayer Treatment - Today's Prayer Treatment

To cover his emotional pain he dealt with it with cannabis, Prozac, work and possibly later with heroine.

People don’t know how to handle their pain is the bottom line. They are an “avoidaholic” looking for anything: food, sex, alcohol, drugs, substance abuse, work, exercise, meditation, TV, OCD, and any other hyper control mechanisms that can be used to hide behind as it’s painful to feel the emotions and deal with them.

The standard traditional methods used don’t actually transform the pain, mostly because most practitioners don’t think it can be transformed. Or the client has been told it’s not safe to be transformed; best do it in little increments.

ecomic

And then there are the economic forces as it’s more financially conducive for the practitioner to keep the client in that state of mind and trapped by continually examining, revisiting and further developing the story of the trauma, never ending.

With my clients, I step into their life, figure out what they are doing to continually recreate this belief and sadness. Then I help them on a continuing basis to ferret out the emotional traumas and pain, the grief, and loss of control and replace it with self-empowerment and the life they desire.

In a hypothetical reality, if Michael or a client similar to his situation had come to me after a lover’s death, we would have released the pain of the grief and kept the love that was there. He would then been able to move forward in life fueled by that love. He would have empowering coping skills to deal with any emotions or unexpected life events that would have arisen.

Then possibly the pain of his mother’s death would have been less and we would have continued again to go inside and let go of the grief and pain of the memory and circumstances around her death from cancer. He would have honored her and kept her loe, dropping the pain, using that to propel him in his life from there on out.

CUQx-VmVEAAO97f

According to reports Michael led an amazing and extraordinary life of humility, service and love to those around him and the issues he felt important. From my experience if I had encountered a client such as him early on in their life path, I would like to think their contribution would been even greater.

A life free from guilt and grief. A newly empowered life built on their existing capacity and with the addition of new tools learned with me, allowing them to move to even a higher plane of love and fulfillment.

Depression

My whole life I’ve suffered from depressionDepression

Rich Walters

Rich Walters SFYB Senior Editor/Author

I grew up around a mother who suffered, an uncle and a grandmother….It has to be genetic…..It’s one of the most debilitating feelings you could ever imagine….It’s root cause is FEAR

Fear destroys more people than any other human emotion……I was always afraid…..Afraid of losing loved ones….Afraid of dying…..Afraid of failure…..Afraid to be around good people because i felt less than…..Afraid of being who God intended me to be which is a loving and caring individual out of fear of being called weak…..I WAS AFRAID OF EVERYTHING!!!! This fear would eventually snowball into CRIPPLING DEPRESSION……

USELESS red Rubber Stamp over a white background.

My depression was so severe it would render me useless…..It’s the kind of depression that’ll make you bed ridden and that’s a terrible place to be….You don’t want to get out of bed to take a shower or brush your teeth and GOD FORBID IF YOU HAD TO VENTURE INTO SOCIETY…..Because you felt less than any other human being you’d come into contact with…..If you felt the way i felt then life just wasn’t fair…..I was always given the short end of the stick…..

That’s about the time i discovered drugs and alcohol…..These substances completely removed any fear i had….they made me fearless……I didn’t have a care in the world and when you’re a person DRIVEN by fear that says a lot…..No wonder I chased the dragon for 20 years……Drugs and alcohol were the solution to all my problems…..Once i graduated college i drifted into the real world…..

tumblr_lqbkowakKg1qkk7llo1_400

But i was too afraid of getting a job……I was terrified that if i wasn’t the best at my job immediately then i was a defective piece of crap…..I couldn’t even make sales calls unless i was loaded because i was too afraid to talk……I couldn’t hang out with women because i was too up tight……I couldn’t have sex because I was too tense…..I always had to be loaded…..If i wasn’t loaded i was scared to death……This continued on for many years until i sat down with a person who told me that i was scared to death….

Allways Afraid

That i was always afraid….Even then i didn’t want to admit it…..I’d say something like ” I’m not afraid of ANYTHING…..i might be paranoid…but I’m not afraid”…..That’s when i had discovered the true meaning of fear…..I always knew i was depressed but i never knew i was afraid….I was afraid because i didn’t have any faith…..I was told that if your fear is high your faith is low…..Today i have healthy fears such as getting high or getting drunk…I know that if i get high or drunk my life is over….

cemitary

But i also have real fears such as losing a loved one to drugs…..This fear is very real…..But at some point i have to turn it over to God or I’ll go insane……I’m no longer depressed because my life is full and I’m grateful for the things that i do have…..I don’t worry about the things that i don’t have……I literally live every moment THANKFUL…..i say it all the time….If you’re a guy like me then every day is thanksgiving…..My life is full of purpose and meaning……

happyiness

My happiness and self worth no longer hinges on money and material things….My external world doesn’t determine my mood…In recovery I’ve discovered that happiness and contentment is an inside job…….I have also learned about gratitude and gratitude is an action word…..If I’m grateful for what i have then how am i showing it??? Am i trying to give back?? The answer to that is yes…..I want people to find what I’ve found….

depression 1

Because if you’ve suffered from depression and addiction then you know the pain I’ve felt and I’ll do everything in my power to help you escape that miserable existence……It can be a lonely cold world but once you’ve found God you’ll never be alone again…..And once you’ve found recovery, you’ll never be alone again……So if you’ve ever felt this way come and find me…..I’ve found a way out……Thank you and God bless!!!!

Watching TV daily it has come to my attention people are behaving much like soldiers suffering from PTSD. They are well… PISSED & In Shock !

On TV we see news flash after news flash of large groups of people rioting and burning buildings. I’ve come to the realization these people must be ill. Symptoms seem to be similar that of PTSD victims suffering from shock.

How did this happen? Is my belief these individuals have been influenced by mainstream media and cannot comprehend many Americans just don’t buy all the media propaganda.

Study some of the pictures (below) when it was announced that Donald Trump won the election. It seems the fire grew much larger at… or just after the inauguration. Anyway food for thought. Could it be a whole new market for treatment centers? Just thinking out loud this morning.

EPA Layoffs

Myron Ebell said in an interview with The Associated Press that Trump is likely to seek significant reductions to the agency’s workforce — currently about 15,000 employees nationwide. Ebell, who left the transition team last week, declined to discuss specific numbers of EPA staff that could be targeted for pink slips.

Donald intends to CRUSH the ridiculous pile of regulations which is strangling the US economy. Thousands of these bureaucrats are expected to get pink slips soon. Treatment center marketers are scratching their heads…. as they brace for the up tic in admissions…. wondering how to inform these insured prospects of their services.

The year is 2016 in Washington DC, New York, New Jersey, and Florida a group of 4 secret ambassadors teamed up to enlist the elitist of the elite within the recovery field to begin Operation “We Can Recover”

I am one of four people who embraced a mission to show the world how easy it is to bitch about reality yet doing nothing but adding more opinions on a war that is killing people on a daily basis.

Plagued by anger towards the people on both sides the ones who were discussing the violation of privacy with the media shedding light on our disease and the reality for some of us accepting defeat.

Five years ago facing a fear and taking an opportunity that I am forever grateful for I was offered a second chance and was led towards recovery on another level dispatcher for a lucrative tow company.

I began to heal. I became so intent on making my cousin’s proud I began to mend old wounds with confronting myself in these years I became more confident in myself and pretty much joked around about all the aspects surrounding my disease this was my self-defense method.

I continued to live with my cousin’s and 2 years into it I suffered a heart attack and embraced life realizing what was important and that was leaving behind a legacy to be proud of and it was assumed that I had overdosed causing my heart to fail.

Then I realized that I needed to educate myself and others around me waging war on the battle against addiction and the demons that lurk within our backyard.

Craig Dickinson would best be described as an old school biker by day and guardian angel 24-7 I began to take more leaps of faith and constantly found myself turning to the site that led me to the third ambassador who led forth the initiative to send a message to the recovery advocates in the world to spread the word of mouth and not be afraid to embrace the broken pieces and address them.

Michael DeLeon who I am blessed for the amazing opportunities and strength to put the actions to play we then were blessed with Robert Henslee from Florida who is the man behind the curtain – Secretary of the Department of Defense Against Addiction (DoDAA) and we called a Silent yet subtle challenge we come out of the shadow inspiring others who are stuck within the addiction epidemic that brought us all together.
