Atrium in the Desert – Jeff Wolfe

john wallace

John SFYB Admin/Outreach

Unfortunately, in an industry dedicated to helping others it is rare to encounter true altruism and sincere concern for the men and women in its care.

The sad fact that financial means typically dictates how an addict will be treated when seeking a sanctuary of sobriety is common place. Many of the men and women embarking into the trusted business of providing such a space for those early in their journey come with the best of intentions as they themselves are in recovery.

Perhaps the financial windfall or the stress of doing business creates a distraction from their own program and is the catalyst of the tragic shift we often see. The owner/operator from treatment level care on down to sober living homes and everything in between seems to detach from the individual they seek to help and in that begets a modality far removed from the initial launch.

These are sick people, sometimes sicker than the client themselves, regardless of continued abstinence, and once that separation begins and the mission they began with is tainted the effectiveness of their service becomes diluted at best.

Finding exceptions to this on any scale worth mentioning, people of lasting integrity who stay the course and maintain the very purpose they set out to provide, are a beacon of light and worth paying mention too.

Scandalous and sensationalized stories of such heart-breaking dissents from safe haven to trap house, the attack on the corruption within the business of treatment has found its way on to the nightly news aptly paired with tales of epidemic overdose rates. This sad state of affairs influences the trust and bravery needed by anyone who seeks help, causing second guessing that could prove fatal. No small part of my mission is to not only shine an honest light on a broken system from an addict’s perspective but more so to illuminate the far greater good found among honest, trustworthy, and progressive organizations who reach back when reached out for.

The Coachella Valley is not only my home but likely one of the largest treatment epicenters in the United States if not the world, among the vast number of inpatient rehabs and countless IOP’s, facilitating the housing needs of their clients exist some amazing sober houses.

In any industry, you can find ugliness and corruption from churches to chain stores and the business of recovery is by no means an exception yet this addict prefers to focus on the positive and stay in the solution.

Many men and women have come along and crossed my path making life more beautiful by showing me there is hope for the addict yet to arrive and one such man, with the humblest of beginnings, sacrifices no expense and gives freely of his heart to provide for them. Spread across the Coachella Valley and servicing the entirety of its recovery community is Atrium Sober Living, with the first of its founder’s houses featuring a beautiful breezeway that inspired the title it spawned from necessity and looking out for the next man.

.A gender specific male house with more than affordable rent, a real sense of the family unit and enough freedom to feel independent and on your way, the men who have laid their foundation here are easily found in the fellowship singing its praises.

The onset of this endeavor was never intended to become the beacon of light that now shines from 5 locations with housing for over 40 addicts in early recovery both and women. Less than a decade ago founder Jeff Wolfe sought to come to the aid of several friends from the fellowship who were struggling, finding out what each could afford then seeking and a home they could collectively inhabit. Nothing more than helping others was the motivation for this leap of faith and what followed was a man possessed by desire to do so for as many as he could.

The original Atrium still stands as a place Jeff can help those with lesser means get their footing and stay connected with a close enough proximity to walk to potential employers and most of all regular meetings. From that small act of kindness that helped his brothers in recovery at the beginning, his passion grew and shines through as his expansion grows with faith and not financial gain behind the motivation.

Atrium Sober Living Houses have become a community within the community hosting open events where the fellowship can gather and residents can socialize and learn how to become a part of, find sponsors and live life. If you are looking for a new way of life or seek to return to the basics and are willing to take the steps then call Atrium (760)534-7493.

Having spent a great deal of time with Mr. Wolfe I personally attest to the true nature in this man’s heart being that of compassion and understanding for the addict as he himself is one and hasn’t lost sight of that. Meeting the next man with a love you can witness in the means by which he reaches out, staying active in his own program and the fellowship has kept Jeff from losing sight of why this business exists, to help others!

Smash The Stigma With Talent

It’s time to shake up the established order of things, smash the stigma and let people know that WE DO RECOVER! One foot in front of the other, sometimes only one moment at a time and even when fall back down, we rise to meet challenges that would break most people.
Note: We have a number of great sponsors for this event. I’ll be adding them to this page later tonight. Tks@R

The taboo discussion of the addict, swept under the carpet and ignored for so long with government policies of waging war upon us, yet we survive. If you could walk in our shoes and see the extent of relentless punishment we bring down on our own heads, the ferocious beast inside that we do battle with daily would likely destroy the “normal” folk out there, you would know how powerful and elusive this illness is.

Granted a reprieve on a day by day basis so long as we maintain a condition of the spirit sufficient enough to be awarded that such grace we walk tall and shine through unimaginable adversity. The misdeeds, broken spirits, and dissemination our lives typically end in the grave, a prison cell or for the chosen few a life in recovery with untold blessings that come in droves.

Once having survived the path of excess and arriving at the palace of wisdom we are likely inspired by the spirit life and come at it with a vigor most people feel threatened by and once attempt to push us down with the stigma of our past.
Michele Garcia

Michele Garcia SFYB Advisory Board/Author

Trust and believe that if any man put me in the positions I put myself in I would have surely killed them, if they did to me what I did to me they would be dead! Broken down in a stolen car that I lived in with a roommate was a consequence that I caused and was inescapable, when I finally was honest enough with myself to realize those consequences would never end I began to understand something clearly at last.

Coming out on the other side of that long dark road I jumped upon the gifts I have always been blessed with, using my so-called talent for stringing together words to share a message of hope.

If you be busted and disgusted and just can’t take it anymore, smashed through more bottoms then you can keep track of and don’t know how to live either with or without dope today then join us and together we shall rise.

Ignore the negative folks, the haters and those still seeking to pass judgment upon us because if you get real about it could the shit they talk ever compare to that which we talked to ourselves?

Robert Henslee

Robert Henslee SFYB Founder/Publisher

Of course not, you couldn’t come close to messing my life up as badly, quickly, or tenaciously as I have and whatever opinion you might want to pronounce regarding me won’t hold a candle to that which I tortured myself with for DECADES.

Get busy trying while I get busy moving and we’ll see who shines through the hardest, if you’re a hater then hate because I love your hate! We who have fought the deadliest fight imaginable, a battle with our own selves and come out swinging on the other side will rise above all that negative nonsense and smile the whole way through.

There is plenty of room on this team of once lost souls who live in the spirit of giving freely of the message they found while crawling out of the depths of hell. You can’t scare us, you can’t beat us and you can no longer pretend that we are not here because each day we ascend to higher and higher peaks in society smashing the stigma and washing away the misconceptions of yesterday.

Displaying this in action we assemble everywhere and highlight our smiling faces, serve as examples for and a beacon of hope to the addict yet to come because we need him so that he may do the for the next man.
This coming month we will Showcase the talents among the recovery community here in Coachella Valley but also live feed broadcast via the Facebook Stop Frying Your Brain Page and living in eternity on our website. March 1, 2016 marks the launch of AIR Wear Recovery Gear. It is also my 18th month of clean and sober living in recovery.

The mission for Addicts In Recovery is to give back and help support recovery centers, organizations and addicts that still suffer. We accomplish this by donating clothing to various groups, both locally and across the country. In my journey into recovery there were many shelters, programs and donations that helped me get on my feet.

AIR also uses proceeds from clothing sales to assist individuals that may need that little extra boost to get over an obstacle. This may be the one thing preventing them from getting the help they desperately need. Some examples include: bus tickets or transportation to a treatment facility, help with cell phone bill to assist with job search, or perhaps just providing a meal. We also assist addicts with support and finding resources that can lead to treatment and/or sober living homes.

P.S. Oh da brain is trying to work out something if you wear a BRAIN SHIRT to the talent show something magic is going to happen. Truthfully we just don’t know what that is yet. (working on it folks)

HIGHER POWERED – My Journey Out of Addiction

Chapter 3

My first day at a homeless shelter had me going through mixed emotions. At this point, I was about 10 clean and sober.

Mike Lindsey

Mike Lindsey SFYB AIR Store

I had successfully detoxed on my own. Well, with a lot of help from my Higher Power. I was excited about getting off of the streets and about this new opportunity. However, I was also filled with sadness about my situation. How could I have let myself end up in a homeless shelter?

I decided that I did not have time to feel sorry for myself. This was the perfect time to gather my life together and rebuild a new one. Folks would mention that we could stay in the shelter for up to six months. The place was pretty nice for a shelter, but I did not want to stay for even six days.

The building was three stories tall with laundry in the basement, dorm rooms on the top floor and kitchen and dining hall on the main floor. I went upstairs after check in and picked out one of the bunk beds available. It turns out there were plenty of beds to go around. It was the other resources that were lacking in order to house more people in need.

I immediately saw many of those people in need. There were other recovering drug addicts and people with mental illnesses among the occupants. It was also fairly obvious that some people were still under the influence of drugs and alcohol. I picked them out of the crowd right away. I was not going to get wrapped up in that bullshit. Not while I was in here. I had bigger plans.

Each day the shelter would feed us in the morning and then kick us out during the business hours. The thought was we are to go out and look for work, find resources, go to work, etc. I had two interviews already lined up. However, I decided to go to the employment office and keep applying for jobs.

I would dread hearing that door close behind me each morning. This meant I had to walk the streets within the very city I practiced my active meth addiction. I kept my head down but constantly looked all around at the same time. I was in a very fragile state, at this point. Just seeing one wrong person could possibly steer me right off my current path. The path I was hoping would lead to a new life.

During my walks from the shelter to the employment office I would see a few old connections each and every day. I just looked the other way and kept walking. Every time I was able to ignore and old “friend” I felt more empowered. My time and my thoughts were now beginning to be consumed through small positive actions.

My friend who, previously picked me up and took me in for a week, helped me get some shoes and a belt for my interviews. I began feeling more confident in this process. I made arrangements with my friend to travel up to Portland for two interviews in one day.

The first interview was at an employment agency for accountants and financial professionals. It was a phone interview with a prospective employer. I did have a great resume with a couple of long tenured positions in Cost Accounting and Business Analytics. However, I was pretty nervous to be on the spot during an interview.

The first interview went very well. I was so confident that I almost blew off the second interview. My friend was the voice of reason. He suggested we make a trip across the river to Washington for the second interview. I had no idea what was going to happen next…

Spiritual Soul at Cielo

As unique a snowflake my personal experience may be, many men and women have trudged the road before me and overcome the very same obstacles that I face because of the wayward path I walked. Having been blessed with great teachers and many shining examples of what grace in action appears as in my life, they too had to move past and detach from that which no longer served them.
john wallace

John SFYB Admin/Outreach

Walking at my side through the struggles I faced and guiding me towards a systematic decimation of the beliefs, misconceptions, and false identifications that stood between and my usefulness to other were some amazing souls that had found their true selves.

One such beautiful soul I encountered in California’s lower desert, a place I had never dreamed of finding healing, was Michele Garcia and her creation Cielo Spiritual Retreat and Sober Living. In attendance of a retreat she hosted one spring weekend several years back, I found myself in awe of the modality and simplicity of the guidance she offered. Beginning with a Sound Bath Healing, a guided meditation with the use of gongs, singing bowls, crystal triangle and several other instruments I had never even seen before, I stepped into a place of openness which made all the difference.

Prior to the first decibel facilitated by this method I had attempted to manifest a state of meditation for a great period of time, I assumed the suggested posture and pose’s and followed the instruction yet never cultivated the desired result. In retrospect, I had been faking this all the while never understanding what that quieting of the mind would benefit yet not for lack of trying, I simple never reached that state. The half hour that followed that first chime, lying flat on my back with hands to my side and intent on grasping to willingness trying one more time it happened.

The 30 minutes of this guided meditation seemed to be both a blink of an eye and an eternity at the same time as I seemingly traveled through space and time with freedom from the chatter my thoughts had always provided.

Hearing Michele’s voice fade off as it began and bring me home towards the end I awoke in body, mind, and spirit and for the first time ever was truly amazed by what beauty that silence brought. A crystal had been placed in my hands during this process without my knowledge, I had fallen into such a deep trance like state it didn’t seem real. We each one by one placed our gifts and intentions in the center and circled to share our experience whereby I found myself unable to accurately describe my gratitude or how deep the transformation felt to me.

Visceral and real yet dreamlike and alien to me I yearned for more understanding and found myself with an open, willing mind as the weekend progressed, cornering Michele for more knowledge as she toured us through the five acres her beautiful home sat upon.

The horse Angel seemed to sense my serenity as we experienced equine interaction, the goats appeared as peaceful as the people and the pigs, well the pigs didn’t seem to be concerned to with our presence at all. Roosters announced to rising of the sun as the bonfire from the first night camping in her desert landscape saw a drum circle, sharing of our souls and peace unknown to me before.

Gratitude welled up in every fiber of my being as I prepared breakfast for myself and the young men who accompanied me on this journey, our campground clean we joined the rest of the retreat when Michele announced the first of a full day’s activities. At that time Cielo served as a sober living home for women as well as the personal home of Michele and since has transformed into a co-ed home as to serve as many as possible. The personal interaction and concern for the betterment of all she encounters, this blessing in the desert she has created is a place of transformation where anyone who arrives can find themselves.

A spiritual psychologist and longtime treatment professional, Michele is a huge advocate for the holistic approach and is available to offer not only space in her home but therapeutic services as well. An extremely full day of comprehensive yet condensed introduction to the spiritual path and way of living shared in this magical place left my proverbial cup overflowing.

Toning, guides to better living and teachings on separating ourselves from our tendency as addicts to assume the role as victims, cloaked in denial and self-betrayal we often yearn for this liberation. In just a few days’ time I felt a greater freedom than that I experienced at times when having been released from incarceration. No longer did I feel trapped by separation, feelings of lacking or being limited in life slipped away and into my Loving Essence I fell.

The evening saw a second Sound Bath facilitated by Michele and my intent was to simply be present and awaken which was exactly the case and gift I received from each moment of this experience. The stars illuminated the heavens above in the aptly named Sky Valley and I found a place of solace away from the chatter and bonfire which dulled the vast view of creation above where every constellation in view was far more pronounced than I had ever noticed. In the quietness of this far off place and away from the glowing souls and beautiful beings that danced around the flames I sat, listened and in the quiet I found a place of true peace and meaning.

Watching as the beauty faded in the rearview I felt as though this was far too short an experience upon our departure. I had found a place I could remain forever there, that place was within and with the serenity it blessed me with I knew I could return at any time.

The doors at Cielo have remained open to me and countless others who have come and gone as Michele gives all creatures of light an opportunity to find their inner reality. Opening her doors regularly to share the gift of sound and freedom from self-bondage I must express my eternal thanks to all the gift she blesses me with still sending love and light and walking at my side. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you….

Addict or Addicted?

There is a vast difference between being addicted to a substance and suffering from the disease of addiction yet the symptoms and manifestations may appear identical as the actions of either seem to mirror one another while actively using.
john wallace

John SFYB Admin/Outreach

The true effects and definable separation of the two are almost impossible to identify until the substance has been removed and the progressive nature of the disease is able to be fully observed. Often, we encounter the individual who has lived a full life, free from the pitfalls of addiction and until some tragic life event brings them to seek out comfort in the euphoria of self-medicating, shows none of the actions that would classify them as addicts.

There are those two who are injured in some way, leading to great physical pain which makes way for the mental anguished that follows. Seeking medical relief for such matters a physician may prescribe an opiate or other addictive substance which even when used as directed and needed has the potential to become “habit forming”. With solely the intent of treating or masking whatever ailment that lead to the use of a substance, unwittingly these so-called normal folk fall prey to the same base level disorder as those who suffer from the disease, at least on a surface level. The true observation and “acid test” for discerning between the two can only be accurately diagnosed once a sufficient period of abstinence has occurred.

This phenomenon is most prevalent amongst those who abuse alcohol and ironically is the most misunderstood as alcoholism carries far less stigma in the public eye when compared to moral judgement many people pass regarding addicts.

Each of us has witnessed the man or woman capable of drinking in a very habitual if not excessive manner yet can maintain control, abstain when beneficial or even stop completely. They can safely determine the outcome when they drink even if the desired outcome is drunkenness which seems to be far more common in our society than that of the alcoholic who will likely tell how baffling these people who can do so seem.

Alcoholism is the disease of addiction, the only feature that divides the two would be the specified substance in question. Distinguishing between the two may seem counterintuitive or arbitrary, pointless or like splitting hairs yet must be understood if the underlying cause is to be established and subsequently treated. The disease of addiction progresses regardless of abstinence and specifying the label based upon the substance in question would be needed for each individual case as they are varied as the addict themselves. The stigma placed upon those who are addicted to illegal substances seems to carry no distinction regarding which illegal substance is in question and as such is the same disorder yet alcohol and the alcoholic have found their own special class.

The cause behind this separation is most likely one created and compounded by the criminalization of narcotics as opposed to alcohol which has seen only a statutory restriction since the 21st amendment repealed the failed experiment of prohibition.

This experiment in it of itself should have been proof positive that any attempt to restrict the use of mind altering substances by way of force would fail miserably and prove only to expand the allure. Most recently seen with the opioid epidemic, which has killed more in the past 6 months than in the previous 2 years combined.

The tragedy we now face was likely spawned by the strict and fierce law enforcement assault upon the rampant abuse of easily obtained pharmaceuticals. The disease of addiction and the abuse of substances are not mutually exclusive and all those dying addicted to opiates and other lethal substances are not addicts, the lack of a better adjective is where this may be confusing. Those who are afflicted with addiction are caught in the grips of a progressive and fatal illness that which cannot be resolved by simple abstinence  , if this were so then once the drug had left the system and the withdrawal symptoms subsided the man or woman in question would regain control and reenter society.

Any observation of the statistics involved in recidivism to both incarceration for drug related offenses or treatment for substance abuse will clearly paint a picture contrary to that believed by those ignorant to the extent of the disease and its effects long after the addict’s last use.

The incessant and lifelong disorder is rooted in the mind and any debate otherwise is quite contrary to progress for if you don’t have the illness then no degree of information could possibly describe the anomaly and phenomenon of craving experienced by those of us who do.

The extent of this damaging ignorance was likely the birthplace of the stigma placed upon addicts, the basis behind mistreatment and perpetuator of such false and ridiculous ideas proposing a moral deficiency or weakness is at the heart of why we use. Regardless of your understanding, without your consent and not having any bearing on even your very existence itself the disease will progress, spread, and continue killing more addicts. The cost on society is so great today and recovery rate so low that clearly, we must stop and reconsider our view of what solutions are at hand, analyze every aspect or face the daunting reality of a multi-trillion-dollar dilemma bringing about less and less change as increasingly more of us die.

Codependency is a killer

Codependency is defined as an excessive emotional or psychological reliance on a partner, typically a partner who requires support due to an illness or addiction.
john wallace

John SFYB Admin/Outreach

This definition falls short of describing the manifestations it has in our lives as addicts as well, not only are with suffering from the disease of addiction but also, we afflict those who love and support us in many ways. Transforming someone who begins as a loving and caring individual into a codependent slave to our illness is an unfortunate casualty of our disease, we rarely are the only sick one in the relationship.

At first this may seem beneficial as the dedicated spouse, friend, or relative gives to a fault and as addicts, selfish and self-centered to the core, we take relentlessly. Unaware of how our behavior effects the other inhabitants of this planet, consumed by self-obsession we often unwittingly run havoc through the lives of those who care for us most. Being on the receiving end of this incessant abuse can destroy one’s ability to see the truth, especially that which comes at the hand of a loved one. From the addict’s perspective, this equation appears more than beneficial at first and blinded by only thoughts of ourselves we rarely see the damage we are causing.

This disorder isn’t limited to the scope of addiction and those who suffer from substance abuse yet is almost always present in such situations, squeeze and addict hard enough and out pop’s a codependent.

There may exist many cases in wider spread society where this behavioral issue is present free from the disease of addiction and to that scope I have no view. As an addict, I can clearly identify where I both suffered from, inflicted upon and was the victim of this self-perpetuating nightmare. Relationships that at the forefront seemed healthy, loving, and natural would at some point or another deteriorate into something dark and imprisoning, trapping both sides in a downward spiral that only separation would solve if we could just break free of the others grasp. Not isolated to the romantic bound forged by lovers, I experienced this tragic set of circumstances most in the relationship with my loving and ever faithful parents.

The love for their child became my greatest weapon and asset in procuring the intended response which generally came as financial support for my habit or relief from the affect its consequences would have had otherwise.

They made for a soft landing and easy mark which was wonderful for me and although I obviously took it for granted they continued to catch me when I fell year and year making it far too easy for me to stay sick. They provided as they believed a parent’s role should be and in the case of my non-addicted siblings the parenting strategy the employed was greatly effective yet in the case of this afflicted soul it was morphed into something dark and ugly that got them sick as well. The fact that my father was an alcoholic yet sober since before I was born and mother who set healthy enough boundaries where that was a necessity for the marriage to continue had no bearing on my ability to manipulate that situation and use it against them.

None of this was intended in a malicious way, in fact I hardly realized I was doing it as addiction is such a cunning psychological foe and rooted in the subconscious and primitive mind this was simply part of my survival instinct.

That which I believed on a base root level was a requirement to stay alive was what was killing me most and their basic primal instinct to protect their child was what eventually made them sick as well. In reflection, I can see all the symptoms of codependency in our interactions and even those where I began to show brief recovery.

The one thing they prayed and hoped for most and wanted more than anything for their son was aided in collapsing by the sickness I has unwittingly caused them and together we would go back down the rabbit hole. This is where I believe truth to be held in the concept of this being a family disease, we keep and create and perpetuate its prevalence from parent to child, sibling to spouse and onward the disease spreads from one human to the next.

The romantic and intimate relationships that we attempt are doomed from the onset as like attracts like and sick begets sickness, the merry-go-round of poor boundaries, people pleasing and control gains speed and the symptoms grow.

Next in the line self-defense to fall will be communication, control (both assumed and relinquished), and obsession all masked behind the ugly face of denial, we keep each other sick. That which we loath the most in our partner is that which we become dependent upon to validate our care-taking all the while crushing our esteem and sense of self. This disorder is just as deadly as the addiction itself, one often being the cause and other the effect it can keep us in everlasting negativity and almost always results in the loss of self.

Who we are becomes dependent upon who you are and our feelings bonded to the way we make each other. Self-compassion and awareness are the forefront of combatting the deadly effects this disorder can inflict upon us.

There is solution and is most often found in regular psychotherapy sessions to help identify and appropriately react to areas where damage can be avoided or must repaired. For each of the symptoms of codependency there is an action to counter it which can be practiced and truly must be to experience to the full scope a healthy relationship offers. The research, study and expansion on this disorder makes progress in leaps and bounds as increasingly more of us identify its presence in our dealings with others and seek to correct it.
