How to Stop Worrying: 9 Simple Habits

by Henrik Edberg

ThePositivityBlog.com

“Worry does not empty tomorrow of its sorrow, it empties today of its strength.” Leo Buscaglia

“Worry often gives a small thing a big shadow.” Swedish Proverb

What does worry look like?

It starts with a nagging thought.

That creates another few thoughts.

And before you know it there is a storm brewing in your mind, making you think irrationally and zapping your mental and physical energy.

Your old friend is back, creating chaos within.

I am no stranger to it either and to the powerful negative effects it can have on life and the happiness in it.

But in the last decade I have found several habits that have helped me to greatly decrease my worrying and to more easily handle such thoughts when they pop up.

  1. Most of things you worry about have never happened.

I love this quote by Winston Churchill:

“When I look back on all these worries, I remember the story of the old man who said on his deathbed that he had had a lot of trouble in his life, most of which had never happened.”

I have found it to be very true in my own life.

So when you feel worries starting to pop up ask yourself this:

How many of the things I feared would happen in my life did actually happen?

If you are anything like me then the answer will be: very few. And the very few ones that actually happened were mostly not as painful or terrible as I had expected.

Worries are most often just monsters you build in your own mind.

I find that asking myself this question regularly and reminding myself of how little of the worries that actually came to life makes easier and easier to stay calm and to stop a worried thought before it becomes a big snowball of negativity.

  1. Avoid getting lost in vague fears.

When fears feel vague in your mind, when you lack clarity then it is very easy to get lost in exaggerated worries and disaster scenarios.

So find clarity in a worry-inducing situation by asking yourself:

Honestly and realistically, what is the worst that could happen?

When I have answered that question then I follow it up with spending a bit of time on figuring out what I can do about it if that pretty unlikely thing happens.

In my experience, the worst that could realistically happens is usually not as scary as what my mind could make up when it is running wild with vague fears.

Spending a few minutes on finding clarity in this way can save you whole lot of time, energy and suffering.

  1. Don’t try to guess what is on someone’s mind.

Trying to read someone’s mind usually doesn’t work too well at all. Instead, it can very easily lead to creating an exaggerated and even disastrous scenario in your mind.

So choose a way that is less likely to lead to worries and misunderstandings.

Communicate and ask what you want to ask.

By doing so you’ll promote openness in your relationship and it will likely be happier as you avoid many unnecessary conflicts and negativity.

  1. Say stop in a situation where you know you cannot think straight.

From time to time when I am hungry or when I am lying in bed and are about to go to sleep I can become mentally vulnerable. And so worries can more easily start buzzing around in my head.

In the past this often lead to many minutes of time that where no fun.

These days I have become better at catching such thoughts quickly and to say to myself:

No, no, we are not going to think about this now.

I then follow that up with saying this to myself:

I will think this situation or issue through at a time when I know that my mind will work much better.

Like when I have eaten. Or in the morning when I have gotten my sleep.

It takes some practice to apply this one consistently and effectively but it also makes a big difference in my life.

  1. Remember, people don’t think about you and what you do as much as you may think.

They have their hands full with thinking about what other people think of them. And with thinking about what is closest to their hearts like their children, pets, a partner or the job or school.

So don’t get lost in worries about what people may think or say if you do something. Don’t let such thoughts hold you back in life.

  1. Work out.

Few things work so well and consistently as working out to release inner tensions and to move out of a headspace that is extra vulnerable to worries.

I also find that working out – especially with free weights – makes me feel more decisive and focused.

So even though working out helps me to build a stronger body my main motivation to keep doing it is for the wonderful and predictable mental benefits.

  1. Let your worry out into the light.

This is one of my favorites. Because it tends to work so well.

By letting your “big” worry out into the light and talking about it with someone close to you it becomes a whole lot easier to see the situation or issue for what it really is.

Just venting for a few minutes can make a big difference and after a while you may start to wonder what you were so worried about in the first place.

Sometimes the other person may only have to listen as you work through the situation yourself out loud.

At other times it can be very helpful to let the other person ground you and help you find a more practical and useful perspective on the situation at hand.

If you do not have anyone to talk to at the moment about the worry bouncing around in your mind then let it out by writing about it. Just getting it out of your head and reasoning about with yourself either on paper or in a journal on your computer can help you to calm down and find clarity.

  1. Spend more time in the present moment.

When you spend too much time reliving the past in your mind then it easy to start feeding your worries about the future. Don’t spend too much time in the future.

So focus on spending more of your time and attention in the present moment.

Two of my favorite ways to reconnect with what is happening right now:

  • Slow down. Do whatever you are doing right now but do it slower. Move, talk, eat or ride your bicycle slower. By doing so you’ll become more aware of what is happening all around you right now.
  • Disrupt and reconnect. If you feel you are starting to worry then disrupt that thought by shouting this to yourself in your mind: STOP! Then reconnect with the present moment by taking just one or two minutes to focus to 100% on what is going on around you. Take it all in with all your senses. Feel it, see it, smell it, hear it and sense it on your skin.
  1. Refocus on the small step you can take to move forward.

To move out the worried headspace I find it really, really helpful to just start moving and taking action to start solving or improving whatever I am concerned about.

So I ask myself:

What is one small step I can take right now to start improving this situation I am in?

Then I focus on just taking that small step forward. After that I find another small step and I take that one too.

Organisational Overview

The client front end department of the organisation will run a set of Social media platforms (website, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) as the key means of both initial contact and ongoing communications means with people struggling with addiction.

The resources department of the organisation will establish and develop relationships with churches across the UK, and evaluated specialist help groups and rehabilitation centres, so that individuals struggling with addiction who are seeking help can be connected to appropriate assistance.

Vision
  • Recognising that stigma perceived by those struggling with addiction often prevents that individual from seeking help, and that the internet provides a suitable medium (perceptually anonymous) for connection, we aim to maintain a website and Facebook page, and other social media platforms, as the key means of making both initial and ongoing connections.
  • Connecting people struggling with addictions to churches in their local community for support prayers and fellowship.
  • Connecting people struggling with addictions to Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, Gambling Anonymous and similar groups and other Core problem help programmes to support them through their recovery.
  • Connecting and referring people struggling with addictions in critical need to treatment centres, rehabilitation centres, counsellors, group therapy.
  • Working with churches, local authorities and other groups to bring an awareness and overcome the global epidemic of addictions in society and associated stigma.

Ethos & values

  • Running social media platforms that are open, honest, balanced and non-judgemental so as to create an environment in which people can feel free to be open and honest about themselves and their own journey in addiction and recovery.
  • We believe that when a person is deeply demoralised, it is crucial in the pathway of recovery to help them out of isolation and disassociation from society by bringing them into a loving and supportive environment.
  • We believe that it is ultimately a connection with God through Jesus Christ that brings long term transformation of life that can help overcome any addiction.
  • We recognise the crucial importance of long term recovery outcomes, so resources will be thoroughly researched and monitored so only the most effective groups and rehabilitation centres are recommended.

Humbly United

Brave souls are we who have waged a great war within ourselves and emerged victorious upon surrender, this is the axiom for which we lay a foundation that will bear the weight of a full life in recovery.

Staying present and mindful is a key deterrent in combatting toxic thoughts of yesterday or fearful projections into tomorrow, right here and now is all we will ever have and only in this moment are we capable of expressing true gratitude. If ever disturbed seek the leak in your spirit and plug it with the joy of simplicity, no big deals today, no worries, no frets, or fears for we are free and can remain as such with purity of our intent. Remain humble and know we are blessed and protected in ways we could not possibly imagine regardless of life’s circumstances so long as we follow this way and carry those along with not yet ready to walk on their own.

Embraced by a power so much greater than our comprehension could possibly encompass we walk with the armor of a thousand knights and regardless of the blows we may suffer along the way our spirits live on. The message we might deliver today will live in eternity and echo the ages for it was bestowed upon us from the divine web which weaves together all things saving lost souls for generation to come. The intuition or inspired thought that which we may be compelled to share is proof positive of the universal consciousness even the most cynical of men will find difficult to deny. The source of such stimulus comes from within ourselves yet oddly feels as the granted from something external to us with a synergy only wisdom can keep us from trying to define.

If yet to experience such things in our personal journey, if the path we travel seems dim and uncertain and the feelings that are spawned by that lack of light do not realize themselves as being self-generated it is the darkness we most certainly are headed towards.

The journey back into the grace and sunlight of the spirit is shorter than we think and in opposition to the endlessly winding rabbit hole of abysmal darkness that always ends in the void, it begs the question why so many of us travelled it for so long.

Gratitude for having walked that path of excess and known the absence of all things worthwhile is just as paramount as that which we must hold dear for the well-lit path of recovery and all the blessings within for it is we who have been to hell that best know the return trip home. Grab hold of yourself and find a love for whom you see in the mirror for it is there that we will learn to love one another in the purist sense and meaning. We who have found ourselves presented with a life beyond our wildest dreams know we keep it only by sharing with others and in that way payment is made upon a spiritual debt that will never be fully paid back.

The ledger shows true in the balance we find as we walk in faith through each day conscious and mindful to align ourselves with the spirit of the universe and trust in the protection if we continue along this way.

Join us if you have yet to, stay we us if you have just arrived and lead us those who got here before us as we all stand together none better or worse for we know that no matter how far from our last debacle we might be it is no further from our next if we lose the humility required for these such blessing to be received. Live Grateful, Stay Present, Stay Here!

A Call To Action!

With a world flooded with those who would seek to take advantage of those in need, the fleecing of private insurance providers by insane overbilling schemes and fraud within the treatment industry doesn’t end there.
john wallace

John SFYB Admin/Outreach

When a few ounces of urine are converted into liquid gold by profit mongers using elaborate laboratory schemes promising riches that far exceed any realm of reason, the sincerity of the message literally gets flushed down the toilet. Multi-million-dollar yacht owner James Slattery aptly named his boat “Pissed Away” as almost a means of mocking the federal investigation of his company Millennium Health and the subsequent 256 million dollars fine which was paid the day it was ordered.

This story seems overshadowed by the Chris Bathum scandal by where the self-proclaimed Rehab Mogul is alleged to have perpetrated over $400 Million in fraud, racking up 75 sexual assault charges and earning himself a 35 years sentence. Most recently we watched as the FBI raided Sovereign Health treatment facilities across Southern California to advance their criminal investigations of fraudulent activity within that billion-dollar business. Add to that the Steve Johnson saga in Palm Beach racking up 48 charges of patient brokering and so as the list grows from top to bottom we are forced to stare the corruption down as the epidemic grows.

The opioid epidemic can no longer be swept under the carpet as mainstream America and the world feel its deadly grip grows, grasping increasingly more within its fatal clutch.

The CDC mortality rates may not be the precise statistics some may require in order to raise the red flag yet you simply need a stroll through any impoverished area in order to look this beast in its eyes. That isn’t to say this blight on our species is limited to those poverty stricken by any means as suburbia suffers alongside the ghetto watching its youth die in unimaginable numbers.

Numbers and stats, rates and flow charts can’t compare to the pain we each feel when this brutal onslaught touches down in our lives and we are left baffled as to where we should turn for help. The headline news highlights these two evils almost simultaneously leaving fear for the lives of the addict in our world and doubt that any true help exists.

Power corrupts and great financial means is often confused as such which is what may cause these perpetrators to believe themselves untouchable until some alphabet agency kicks in the door, but what about the addict?

What about the loved seeking help and assistance dealing with the addict? What about the society that will bear the cost of treating the addict?

The solution is transparency and openness in this business which when corrupted is often shrouded and guarded from peering eyes hidden behind HIPAA, a protection intended to aid the client not the facility. HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996) is United States legislation that provides data privacy and security provisions for safeguarding medical information. This legislation has been the protective shield for many clients, helping them find recovery without fear of the unfortunate stigma addiction carries.

Being that 91 Americans die every day from opioid overdose and over half those are prescribed by their primary care physician this shadow of darkness must be brought into the light!

When the epidemic more than doubles in deadly force from 2015 and the 33,000 estimated dead from opioid overdose alone, 158,000 estimated total deaths from all drugs that year to shocking numbers this year proves to show, we must rally together for effective means of putting this evil genie back in it’s lantern. 2017 shows so far to be the deadliest year on record where overdose is concerned and it’s only a little more than half over.

Combining the scandal and fraud perpetrated by the very institutions tasked with combatting this disease, the TRILLIONS spent, billed and thrown at it and the headline news airing something about the growing epidemic we must rethink, shift and find a new way. We at Stop Frying Your Brain are a community of over a quarter million addicts joining hands as we do at the end of meetings and shouting for change!

..Revolution in the means we go about treating the addict! Real Progress in the fight against the deadly killer which is not on the streets but the illness within!

Transparent facilities with open doors and legitimate practices! You got nothing to hide you say, SHOW ME! No more will we stand for the same lies and bureaucratic run around, we want to know what you plan to do different! Countless treatment facilities claiming to be evidence based,  well show us the evidence!

The numbers are shocking and I’m not quoting sources because I want you to look them up, I want you informed and not by me, go look and find 90% relapse rates, 85% of all in need receive no help at all, 23 million in need, 4.7 trillion billed…. This disaster must be treated as such, Start asking questions, start taking action!

Beginning again…my truth

It’s been a whirlwind of changes these past 4 years in recovery. I’ve been trying my best to roll with the punches and move on! My past will always be what it was, I can’t change it!
traci domergue

Traci Recovery Chicks SFYB

Repeating it is not an option, so here I am, moving on. I’m hoping my messages of hope, love, kindness and redemption are heard, especially by the ones still sick and suffering and their families that are living in that dark world with them!

The start up of me abusing drugs was something I swore I’d never do…I had been married to an addict and knew firsthand how that could destroy a family! I had been to ALANON meetings to help me understand his addiction and know it wasn’t my fault for his bad decisions. How was I to know I’d one day put my family and loved ones in that same dark place? It was shocking to them that I had become a junkie!

Holidays or family get togethers at my parents home had become uncomfortable, with everyone walking on eggshells around me…and I was most times too high or in the process of getting high to even care.

Looking back now, I see the worry and age I had put in my parents eyes….I’m very grateful they never gave up …this means a lot to me!

Although I made amends with whomever I had disrespected and hurt..not all were ready and willing to accept my apologies. They are expecting me to relapse and repeat my mistakes. I can’t change their feelings toward me, but I can leave that situation in God’s hands, His will be done in His time, not mine! He knows my heart and my relationship with Him is powerful and 100% truth! He’s helped me see my worth, telling me to do my best and that He will never leave my side.

My eyes are open to who I am and it’s a brand-new, peaceful and compassionate me. I’m someone that I am proud to be..no longer hiding behind drugs and chaos. My wall has come down and I let others know I have been in that bad space and if they reach out, wanting to leave it all behind them, they can make it out too!

No, I’m not the same person I was before addiction. Who I’m becoming is the one God planned for me to be….trustworthy, respectful, and humbled by His grace! My prayers are full of praise and gratefulness. I take each day and I’m happy within…the empty spots I once filled with drugs are now occupied with joy and the need to help others. Service work keeps me grounded…

Seeing the blessings God has so willingly gave to me pushes me to do for others, all I can, when II can , and because I can! I do not and will not let my past define me…it’s a lesson I use to let everyone know they have a chance to be a better person, a chance to show themselves they don’t have to remain in addiction! The best time to begin again is now! We aren’t promised tomorrow, so make the present count!

THEORISED STAGES OF HUMAN DEVELOPMENT THAT MAKE SENSE!

When I found recovery and started turning my life around I knew (like many in recovery) that I wanted to help others. I studied counselling and was fascinated with how we as humans develop and the developmental stages it is theorised that we must go through in order to evolve.
David Gale

David Gale

I love the fact that we are all unique and that no two of us are the same. Even though we are all different it is theorised that we all have the same needs that we must obtain to reach our full potential. Fulfilling these needs is the only way that we as human beings can evolve to be the greatest version of ourselves.

A well known American psychologist Abraham Maslow spent years studying human development and proposed a theory which is known as ‘Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs’. Maslow’s theory exists of 5 main levels of human development (though there is an extended version) and it suggest that we cannot move onto the next level before completion of the previous level. The theory makes a lot of sense and is still considered viable to this day (nearly 75 years later).

A brief description of the stages of human needs to development is as follows:

The first stage is our physiological needs. Physiological needs are the physical requirements for human survival. If these requirements are not met, the human body cannot function properly and will ultimately fail. These include air, water, food, excrement and sex.

The second stage is our safety and security needs. As the stage’s name suggest it’s these needs that make us feel secure from both internal and external forces which we only seek once our physiological needs are met. These needs include personal safety, housing and shelter, financial security, health and overall wellbeing.

The third stage is our need of belongingness (acceptance) and our need to love and feel loved. These needs are met through social groups and personal relationships be it family, friends or intimate relationships.

The fourth stage is our self esteem needs.

Self esteem gives us opportunities and enables us to pursue our dreams with confidence and accept ourselves for who we truly are. It allows us to accept our short comings which in turn enables us to grow and better ourselves to learn and overcome such shortcomings.

The fifth stage is self actualisation.

For people to obtain this stage they need to reach their full potential in being that they are the best that they can be in their desired direction. It may be found through being the perfect partner, a career, a sport, a specific art form or whatever it is they have truly desired to master in life.

The reason I am posting this is because I feel if we can understand our needs we have a better understanding on how to achieve them.

I remember whilst I was in treatment in one of our group sessions it became quite apparent that we all shared similar characteristic traits though low self esteem was predominant in every person despite the persona we portrayed. This isn’t surprising when we think of the stigma associated with addiction and how this fills us with negative thoughts of self and makes us feel ashamed. We isolate and cut ourselves off from the general community, our friends and family, hence we do not feel a part of or feel a sense of belonging. I believe human connection is the most vital part of overcoming addiction and Bruce Alexanders experiment with ‘Rat Park’ suggests this also.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rat_Park

I also believe that addiction can reverse our human development. Think about it!
Let’s say we have met all our needs. We have mastered our chosen direction in life and have a successful career that fills us with confidence and financially provides our basic needs and then some. We have a home and a loving family and social network that we feel a part of.

Now throw Addiction into the mix! We become less productive and soon we prioritise our addiction and our career is lost. With that we lose our self esteem going from feeling confident to feeling ashamed. We start to isolate and disconnect from society and our personal relationships. We lose our financial security and our home ending up on the street with no personal security or basic needs (food and shelter).

The good news is human beings are very resilient. In the right environment with the right supports we can and do recover. Recovery allows us to redevelop bigger and better as during our struggles we develop many strengths that would otherwise be unknown to us. In recovery we learn to forgive and accept that there is no need to feel shame which allows us to come out of isolation and reconnect within our social setting. We begin to feel accepted and regain a sense of belonging which in turn allows us to accept ourselves which builds our self esteem and worth. With that we gain confidence and again seek opportunity and find purpose.

It’s never to late to turn everything around. There is nothing in this world more resilient than the human spirit so never give up hope. If you need help please reach out because life can be good again. We can and do recover and we don’t have to do this alone. The recovery community is here to help. If I can help in any way please don’t hesitate to contact me.
Much peace and love to you all
David Gale ✌️💚
