Miss-Diagnosing Allergies From Some Common Addiction Symptoms
common-signs-and-symptoms-of-addiction-e1453394436240 Everyone entering into addiction treatment goes through the intake process. I would like to believe that all centers truly want to assist in their clients achieving long-term sobriety. The doctors and intake specialists are utilizing specific protocol during this process. What if there is a missing piece that can make the clients feel better, give them a life-long tool, and possibly reduce some chances of relapse?

Man blowing his nose next to a doctor

How thorough centers and detox facilities are during the intake process is questionable as there is no standardized protocol that is universal in the industry. This process many times becomes a cookie cutter process because of coarse they all know the symptoms of addiction.
I believe that all treatment centers try to make their clients as comfortable as possible within their protocols. However, many centers do not address allergies in these protocols. This is vital as their clients are relying on their expertise to get them on the road to recovery.

Consider this, 50% of Americans suffer from allergies. For treatment centers and detox facilities to understand the symptoms of allergies and how they could relate to the symptoms of addiction, they would have to consult with an allergist. Allergies have the same symptoms for individuals that suffer from addiction and individuals that do not suffer from addiction.

self reflectionBelow are some blog posts from individuals that have suffered from allergies. While there are many more common symptoms of allergies, I challenge you to compare these symptoms with the symptoms of your clients, and if you’re an individual that suffers from addiction try to compare them to some of what you are feeling;

I’m allergic to every airborne allergen they tested me for. I had eight really serious sinus infections – 103 fever, sinus drainage bad enough to be hugging the ceramic throne, my skin hurt – within a 6 month period of time. Since I started taking the shots (I give them to myself) I haven’t had a single sinus infection. I still deal with allergy problems, but they’re not nearly as bad as they were before I started taking the shots. I even got off the shots for a couple of months to see how I would do without them. That was a bad idea. The shots, combined with allergy meds, have been a lifesaver.

I have taken allergy shots before and they helped me tremendously. I have been off of them for about 3 years now and I am thinking about going back on them. I had the allergy test and was allergic to everything except two allergens that were not even located in my area. I would have severe sinus drainage that would make me nauseated and sick to my stomach almost every morning for several years. It really interfered with work because I would have to leave my desk to use the restroom because my drainage made me so sick. Not fun to say the least! Since I have taken the shots, I may have gotten sick two or three times in the last three years due to drainage problems. I would say if you have severe allergies, then definitely take the shots. If zyrtec or allegra control your allergies, then I would say to stick to your prescription allergy meds. Zyrtec and Allegra didn’t really work well for me until

I’ve been on allergy shots for the better part of a decade. Before I started them, the right side of my nose was swollen all the way shut and the left one nearly so. I have lots of trouble getting enough rest at night and can’t hold a job. Needless to say, my life is a living h*ll. All because of allergies. The shots have helped because my nose isn’t nearly as swollen as it was. They have not eliminated any of my allergies, however. Now I have new ones and am getting worse. For some people, allergy shots eliminate their allergies. I don’t know any of the statistics as to how many people that amounts to. This whole fiasco has cost us many many dollars. Life just isn’t fair. If you decide to go with allergy shots, I hope they totally get rid of all your allergies. Good luck.

reductionMost of these symptoms our clients come in with every day and rarely are they tested for allergies. While allergy’s are certainly not the cause of the addiction it could potentially help them feel better, provide them a life-long tool, and reduce some of the potential for relapse. Is Your Landlord Partially Responsible for Your Relapse?

rental_agreement_1This website is becoming the most visited substance abuse site in the nation. Click here to learn more

I saw an article on allergy testing as it relates to addiction on http://www.stopfryingyourbrain.com/ and thought, I’m going to contact the website owners and see if they would let me share my story to help others that have been diagnosed incorrectly due to their addiction problems.

I’ve been driving down the road to recovery for two years.I have been in 4 different treatment centers trying the to find the right one to give me what I need to sustain my sobriety. I have several medical issues that never seem to go away.

I recently went to my doctor for a migraine headache that just doesn’t seem to go away, a stuffy nose that had been around for a long time, and a skin rash. The stuffy nose had also been causing a whistling sound when I would breathe making it hard to sleep, and making my eyes water. I was also experiencing a feeling of tightness in the chest, and found it hard to breathe from time to time.

Types of Allergies Word Circles Concept with great terms such as mold, food, pollen and more.

My doctor asked some unusual questions during his examination. He asked me where I lived, If I rented or owned my home, and how old my home was. I was set back by these questions. I asked him, “Why he was asking me these questions?” I am here for you to help me with my medical issues. He told me that many people suffer from allergies and don’t even realize it.

warningDuring his examination he told me that he was going to send me for allergy testing. He said it would not hurt, just several pin pricks on my arm and if there is a reaction we would know what and if I was allergic to. He said he was going to give me medication for my migraines, and also recommended taking over the counter medicines; a decongestant, nose spray, and some eye drops. I told him that I was in recovery and was afraid to take any medications. When I told him I was in recovery, I noticed a change in how he dealt with me. After that point I felt like he did not know too much about recovery.

why-howAfter, I left his office, it made me think about a couple of things. First, had I let the doctor know at the beginning of the visit that I was in recovery (which is important for him to know), would’ve he tried to test me for allergies, or would’ve he figured that my symptoms were related to my addiction problem.

Even more troubling, how come the four different treatment centers that I went to did not ask me the same questions to see if I had allergies, test me, and find out that this was part of the reason I was feeling so bad.

Failed Test ca. 2001

Well, the test results from my allergies came back that I was allergic to mold, milk, and yes cockroaches. Not to upset anyone, cockroach parts are in most of the chocolate we eat. The FDA approves 60 insect pieces per 100 grams. ABC News did a story on this in 2012.

The apartment I lived in was old and musty, and there were cock roaches. I moved out and am definitely feeling better. I know that this is not the main cause of my relapses, however it was a trigger that could of be avoided with the proper medical attention of the 4 treatment centers that I went to for treatment..

Why Allergy Testing is Important to Alcohol Addiction

Silhouette of a man in a business suit giving a shrug with a question mark

Many treatment centers think they have the best program, protocols, and staff to treat addiction. They are so confident in their system and that they believe they know exactly what their client is experiencing. It almost becomes a “cookie cutter” treatment process, however many do not address that Alcohol addiction can also be perpetuated by hidden food allergies.

signs

We can all agree that our clients have abused their bodies in many ways including their diet, severely damaging the “gut” during the course of the disease. This abuse is usually bad enough where the client cannot correctly decipher the signals from the body; telling them what is going on and why they are felling badly. The doctor and clinicians generally attribute this to the disease, mental, and the behavioral issues concerning duel diagnosis.

streetsigns

Most treatment centers do not address the issue of allergies and the role they play in addiction. Consider this, alcohol is distilled from corn, wheat, and rye. These are all common allergens that 50% of all Americans suffer from. Based on this fact alcohol addiction can be perpetuated by hidden allergies. William Philpott, MD, PhD, and Board Certified in Neurology, Allergy and Psychiatry, explains the body produces endorphins (enkephalins), when stressed by an allergen. These opiate like endorphins reduce anxiety and perpetuate the addiction.

Most medical scientists agree that the primary cause of allergies is the unregulated release of histamine from the cells. This is caused by genetic malfunctions within the immune system. How does this tie into addiction? Drugs are a toxin to the body not unlike rye, ragweed, dust, etc… Whether it is those or alcohol (alcohol contains many known allergens; corn, wheat, and rye) they are dealt with by the immune system. The immune system tries to get rid of these “poisons”.

Distillation_of_dry_and_oxygen-free_toluene

Through the distillation of corn, wheat, and rye they concentrate allergenic congeners. Hidden allergies to these foods can perpetuate these addictions or trigger violent or unpredictable behavior. This behavioral is common with alcoholics.

Joan Mathews-Larson and Mark Mathews, in “The Role of Allergies in Addictions and Mental Illness,” from the 2009 Praeger International Collection on Addictions, unveil some interesting information on food allergies relating to alcoholics. They present that abstaining alcoholics will crave “allergy-provoking foods” like grains, sugars, and yeast. All of these are the basic ingredients in alcohol. All of these attribute to forming peptides that can bind to endorphin receptors.

tumblr_m3eygryh3o1romjq9o1_500

Now we know that the raw ingredients of alcohol can actually be toxins to the body. What else happens, especially in the “gut” of an alcoholic? Concerning general food allergies, the “guts” inteninal lining gets damaged. This causes an irritation and a vast Increase with intestinal permeability (leaky gut syndrome). This is important because the leakage triggers an immune response from the body to protect itself. When this auto protection occurs, it can cause depression, headaches, loss of concentration and many other symptoms. These symptoms are often miss-diagnosed by the physician, and clinician at treatment center, and detox facilities as “cookie cutter” symptoms of the disease.

Rishi Manchanda has worked as a doctor in South Central Los Angeles for a decade, where he’s come to realize: His job isn’t just about treating a patient’s symptoms, but about getting to the root cause of what is making them ill—the “upstream” factors like a poor diet, a stressful job, a lack of fresh air. It’s a powerful call for doctors to pay attention to a patient’s life outside the exam room.

Life in sobriety is a very valuable gift. We all need to protect ourselves from any snake bites!  (even the biting snakes that others declare are safe.  Read your labels!)

My First Relapse Prevention Warnings came from England

My First Relapse Prevention Warnings came from EnglandMy First Relapse Prevention Warnings came from England. Get tested right away and learn why!

StopFryingYourBrain.com becoming most viewed Substance Abuse sites in the nation click here and learn more.

article-2605886-1D23CF3000000578-67_964x688

For 21 days I detoxed on my bed in the tropical heat of a 3rd world country over 11 years ago.

I had been blessed with an overwhelming case of vertigo.  I used the verb ‘blessed’ because it was the first time in 8 years that I was literally unable to get to a drink of alcohol!

After the world stopped spinning from the vertigo, I was able to text and then visit an American travel journalist, who was laid up in our town.  He had fallen and broken his hip in a hotel shower.  Since he did not speak Spanish I had been called to come and translate.  Before I got the vertigo, I had been attending to his medical, internet and ATM affairs while he was bedridden for 6 months.

My First Relapse Prevention Warnings came from England

Well, that man had been one of a long line of angels with invisible wings guiding and encouraging me thru early sobriety. He had been in AA 20+ years and led me to Google to find a Big Book in English.  Google led me to a Brooklyn AA group that sent me all the 12 Step literature I could wish for.  The literature led me to LIM (Loners, International Meetings), which is an AA snail mail and email sponsor listing for people out of country.   LIM led me to my first on line sponsor. She was a genuine ‘Royal Lady’ in England!

She was quick to list the ‘do and do not’ list for my relapse prevention safety. It went like this:

  • No over the counter allergy relief medication containing Benadryl (diphenhydramine) – many times indicated as “PM” tagged to end of a medicine’s name.
  • And no pseudoephedrine – the active ingredient in allergy medication/decongestant combos, typically signified by a “D”, as in Zyrtec-D, Claritin-D.  It is classified as an amphetamine!  (It also happens to be the starting point for making meth.)

My British on-line sponsor, also insisted that I was to immediately get to a good doctor and inform the doctor that I was recovering from substance abuse and needed allergy tests.  She said that I must know exactly what I am allergic to in order to avoid those allergens in my life.  She insisted that I not put my sobriety at risk by ever needing to be given the above mentioned medications in a hospital.

My First Relapse Prevention Warnings came from England

She instructed me to get to a chiropractor and start regular adjustments so I could begin a no neck and back pain existence.  Neck and back pain were the reasons that began my drinking in the first place.  Other the counter pain relievers indicated by PM have diphenhydramine.   Diphenhydramine, again repeated, is dangerous for we in recovery.  It is a trigger to pick up!

She instructed in detail to avoid alcohol as an ingredient at all!  That included powder form as a preservative as well!  And most water flavor sprays and drops include Propylene Glycol, which can be dangerous, too.  But when I write dangerous, this refers only to avoiding triggers of substance abuse relapse.     For sure, mouth rinses and breathe sprays and cooking extracts are loaded with alcohol!  Read labels!

nocontact2

No contact with alcohol on my face or body for 2 years.  Her suggestion for smelling pretty was to perfume the clothing but never touch the skin with alcohol.  You and I both know that a baby can fall asleep in the midst of screaming teething pain if vodka is just rubbed on the baby’s gums.  Skin has pores.  Topical medication is applied to skin because skin has pores that absorb the chemical remedy. Hence, skin can absorb alcohol.  I lived in a very hot area and spraying on my Jean Nate after each shower had been a loving pleasure for years.  Dang! I counted the months for 24 months before I used after shower spray again. Now, maybe here in the United States there are non alcohol body fresheners. Read labels!

Never let others prepare your refreshment at any function where alcohol is being serve. Pour it yourself or stand in front of the server without conversational distraction, eagle eyeing the task as it is done.

My First Relapse Prevention Warnings came from England

Be sure to inform all your doctors and medical service providers that you are deathly allergic to any medication with alcohol and also allergic to mind altering medications!  I have had to actually get testy (demandingly rude) with a dental surgeon who was insisting my spouse needed an after surgery mouth rinse with 11% alcohol.  I wonder how many relapses that dentist had caused.  And it is not only the relapse, it entails battered wives, divorces, wrecks, lost jobs and on and on.  I am sorry the dental field has no concept.  He never could hear me and I was considered a nut at that dental clinic.

When I was 3+ years sober my son flew up to Pennsylvania from his Navy dock for Mother’s Day.  We ate at my first oriental buffet.  I had not had pickles in several years because where I had been living all pickled items were cured in alcohol.  So, I had asked at the local AA meetings if pickles were safe in America as I saw the members eating burgers with pickles. They had never heard of a pickle being in alcohol.  Well, my British Lady Sponsor sure had. She is the one who had warned me in the first place.  Watch out for pickled foods.  They can be cured in alcohol.

My First Relapse Prevention Warnings came from England

Short and sweet, I ate 2 thin slivers of pickle; I immediately felt the ole warm glow we all remember, if we in sobriety.  I got loud in the restaurant declaring they were the bless pickles in the world!!!

This is why it is so vital to attend meetings.  We hear and soak in experiences and strengths.  We learn recovery tools and recovery alerts. I heard the voice inside say:  Any thing that wonderful is not right.  Stop!” Two hours later I rocked back and forth for three hours on my bedroom floor holding myself and clapping my hands.  The obsession had returned!  Not only could I not remember the Serenity Prayer, I could only remember it began with an ‘S’.  I clapped and rocked and chanted that letter ‘S’ for 2 hours.  I laid on the carpet another hour just thanking God I had been able to stay put and not leave and hunt my substance.

My First Relapse Prevention Warnings came from England

I had been bitten by the snake!  Wow!  My spouse and I are label readers and always inform the waitress or maitre de that we are highly allergic to alcohol in any form.

And we have had allergy tests to never subject ourselves to an allergy attack.  We have taken the correct measure by knowing exactly what our allergens are, so we do not need to be treated at a hospital with dangerous trigger medications.

Life in sobriety is a very valuable gift. We all need to protect ourselves from any snake bites!  (even the biting snakes that others declare are safe.  Read your labels!)

We watch our intake and our bodies have been healing!  We enjoyed homemade shrimp Creole last night! (a gout no no.)  No more dizzy for me, either!  We do still pray over our food, but not due to fear but gratitude.

MISSING TEST

Missing Test Could Decrease Addiction Relapse Rates

The national relapse rates of drug and alcohol addiction treatment are at an astounding 90%. There are many reasons for relapse on both sides of the coin.
Relapse due to circumstances caused directly by the individual in treatment, issues directly related to the treatment facility, and many external factors.

Regardless of the reasons we need to be doing everything we can to increase the extremely poor success rates. When individuals enter into treatment they are not usually feeling very well and experience many feelings and emotions; scared, confused, worried, anxious, excited, etc… All of these can be possible triggers for relapse if they are not controlled and dealt with appropriately. It is critical that the individual feel as good as possible thus reducing possible triggers.

road-signs_2441159b

Individuals entering into recovery will many times be unable to decipher the signals from their bodies to know why they are not feeling well. The disease has their bodies so far out of whack that it’s difficult for the treatment professionals to pinpoint exactly why individuals are not feeling well. However, it should be the treatment centers #1 priority to make sure all their clients are feeling as good as possible.

50 percent high resAccording to the third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES III), If you live in the US there is a huge chance that you suffer from allergies. It found that 54.3 percent of the US between the ages of 6 – 59 tested positive to one or more allergens. Allergies aren’t just sniffling and sneezing which is bad enough for a recovering addict. Allergies cause sore throats, headaches, sinus infections, itchy eyes, fatigue and general malaise—symptoms that make it difficult to tough it out, and stay on track for recovery.

what-you-need-to-know-about-mortgages
In addition, according to Sixwise.com “50% of U.S. Population Has Allergies, Most Don’t Realize It & Suffer Unnecessarily … Do You?”. Even with this vast number of allergy sufferers, as a population we are ill prepared to care for them, and pinpoint their causes. Also, take into consideration according to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America the US receives a failing grade in allergy awareness, symptoms, prevention and treatment.

take are of your body high resThe NHANES III study revealed that nearly half of all allergy sufferers wait until symptoms occur to take action, rather than taking preventative measures. If the individuals entering treatment wait until symptoms occur it will drastically increase the chances for relapse.

“Allergy testing can not only be a medical necessity in addiction treatment, but with everyone in the US.”

Medicineworld.org reports that allergies are the 6th leading cause of chronic disease in the United States, costing the health care system $18 billion annually. That cost does not include the addiction and behavioral health field with relapse caused by allergies. The relapse causes related to allergies include; sore throats, headaches, sinus infections, itchy eyes, fatigue and general malaise. They can also include taking self-prescribed over the counter medicines like Dextromethorphan (used in many cough medicines), Pain relievers (acetaminophen and ibuprofen), Caffeine medicines and energy drinks, and Pseudoephedrine (nasal decongestant and stimulant is found in many cold medicines). When someone in treatment is not feeling well from allergies and is not treated by a professional for allergies they will most likely resort to the over the counter remedies.

Don’t Give Up Hotdogs Pizza!

Don’t Give Up Hotdogs Pizza!

So, have you been doing without a favorite food that you really enjoy, yet get a negative reaction to, when you feast upon it? Here is the definition of an allergy.  Take a look: Don’t Give Up Hotdogs Pizza!

ALLERGY is an abnormal body response to substances that can be swallowed, inhaled, touch the skin or are injected.

Maybe a person thinks from process of limitation that he or she is allergic to hotdogs or pizza or ice cream.  So he or she goes through baseball games, outings at the pool and birthday parties with “NO, thank you, I like it. But it doesn’t like me.”  Wait!  There may be a better way to handle this.  And it could actually be safer in the long run.

Now for another definition: ALLERGEN is the name given to a substance to which a person is allergic.

So, let’s take wieners as an example.  Have you stood in front of the different brands and thicknesses and lengths of wieners at the super-market lately?  Here are a few descriptive words that now apply to hotdogs: pork, fat free, mixed meats, soybean, chicken, turkey, Angus beef, lean beef, kosher beef, smoked, jumbo, with cheese, with jalapeno, and more and longer and mini bite size.

My question is: does that person really have to do without the joy of a hotdog just because he or she does not know the exact ALLERGEN?  It could be one single ingredient that affects their body in a negative way.  So by taking an allergy test, the culprit is revealed.  All guess work and the risk of not knowing the true allergy trigger is illuminated. And it would just be a matter of a little label reading until the correct brand and package is discovered as being safe. I can image biting into the bun, wiener, chopped onion and mustard now! Why do without?

We watch our intake and our bodies have been healing!  We enjoyed homemade shrimp Creole last night! (a gout no no.)  No more dizzy for me, either!  We do still pray over our food, but not due to fear but gratitude.

How Allergy Testing Changed My Life. Here’s something to think about

StopFryingYourBrain.com becoming most viewed Substance Abuse sites in the nation click here and learn more.

test

On December 26, my hubby and I took 2 months off.  We go to a retirement fishing village on the Texas coast.  Last winter Fred and I stayed ‘til March 5 so he could go to the annual Oyster Fest!  He loves oysters, lobsters and all softshell seafood.

There is only one conflict.  Fred has suffered gout attacks for 30 years!  I have battled debilitating dizzy attacks most of my life. We both take care of our bodies and eat right.  Yet, I had become exhausted trying to figure out the magic formula of what made us sick!

oyster-festOyster Fest as cool.   They had tantalizing south Texas food like: homemade tamales and hand patted tortillas.  My Honey had his oysters, while crossing his fingers and taking his pill to prevent a gout attack. I wonder if one can enjoy prohibited foods in that state of mind?   I ordered barbecue wrapped in aluminum foil right off the grill.

Oh my!  I woke up dying the next morning.  My body was trying to protect itself by to extracting everything inside me. Fred drove me to the doctor. The world was spinning, my head was about to pop open.  I could barely breathe.

doctor apple
Our holistic doctor saw me immediately and quickly treated me for toxic poisoning.  When able, I told her: “I don’t care what it cost!  I can’t go on trying to figure out what we can and can’t eat.   It’s too ‘iffy’ and too scary.  It’s wasting our time and our productivity. I am tired of living sick!  Please, is there any test to tell me the right answer?

Yes!   There are great allergy test!  We followed up and took them. The test results were remarkable!  I had been putting into my body, around my body and on my body the things that were killing my body. How could I know if I never took allergy test?  She explained that bodies are meant to heal themselves, if we stay away from what we are allergic to.  Each body is different.  I got a plastic card to keep in my wallet to remind me of the products I could not have.  I got a Sherlock Holmes spyglass to read ingredient labels.

We watch our intake and our bodies have been healing!  We enjoyed homemade shrimp Creole last night! (a gout no no.)  No more dizzy for me, either!  We do still pray over our food, but not due to fear but gratitude.

Recommend

I earnestly recommend allergy tests.   I’m 68 and Fred is 72.  We pop out of bed each morning like Jack-in-the-box!   Plus, we are happy, productive, active newly-weds of 8 years.  You know, our bodies were meant to heal themselves if we keep away from what we are allergic to.  This is a golden tip that I offer to you.  Go have allergy tests run.  I learned the hard way and hope that you’ll take heed.  I wonder how much money I save by having a healthy body that does not need emergency room visits and costly medicine?
