The New Gambling Disorder

The New Gambling Disorder

StopFryingYourBrain.com becoming most viewed Substance Abuse sites in the nation click here and learn more.

Problem gambling, pathological gambling, compulsive gambling and gambling disorders are all names labeling the gambling addiction. Just a short time ago, problem gamblers were thought to be middle aged while male northeastern mobsters that had half-smoked cigars in their mouths talking funny and betting at the race track, poker game or at a craps table.

In walks the new and improved problem gambler. And guess what? He can be a she and can be young or old, gay or straight, American or foreign, short or tall….. Sound familiar?

I imagine it does because only a few short years ago, we were trying to find ONE profile to describe the alcoholic or drug addict. And we had some stereotypical descriptions of the drug addict and alcoholic and found that those descriptions were wrong too!

Today, we know that addiction is an equal opportunity destroyer. Yes, that’s right. The new gambler can be your girlfriend, your grandma or grandpa or your best friend that thinks he is a professional gambler because he has won a local poker tournament.

Now, what do we do with this information? Gambling is everywhere, just like drinking is. Most people can gamble recreationally and never develop a problem. In fact about 95% of all people that gamble will never have a problem. Of the additional 5%, 2.5 % of them may have an occasional problem such as a spending too much time or money at a casino or gamble to relieve an uncomfortable feeling and then get back into their daily life routines and be a “normie” again. And then, here are somewhere between 1-3% of people that gamble that will develop a problem that moves down the addiction slope.

If you or someone you know has a gambling addiction or they are moving in that direction, help is available by clicking the link below. For more relevant articles about gambling addiction Click Here

The Lure of Easy Money

By: Scott McAdams

Are you addicted to risk-taking in the pursuit of easy money? Do you think you’re good at it? If so, you’ve allowed the appeal of gambling to seduce you.
But here’s some good news. There’s a way out.
Picture a beautiful spring day at the races. Dad and Mom hug you excitedly as the powerful racehorses come crashing by. This could be the best time you’ve ever had!

Using the Principles of Recovery to Face the World Successfully

FB Join GroupBut you’re no longer a child, and it’s not a spring day. It’s freezing cold, a harsh winter night, and you’re sleeping next to a trashcan in an alley because your horse didn’t place yesterday.

Yup, gaming offers no security. None. Nada.

Why not? Because of the “mathematical laws of probability,” which simply means the House always wins. And it does, eventually.

You don’t need a bookkeeper to tell you the House pays out less than it takes in. This is how they make money. They don’t gamble.  They know gambling is a losing game.

loser

The perks cease when you begin to lose heavily. Your bar tab is closed, the smiling servers are nowhere to be found, and you make another scramble to the ATM. You’re informed your room & meal perks are no longer available. Security personnel hover around your table, concerned that you’ll lose your composure along with your savings. Your anxious spouse begs you to stop, to go home. You’ve hit bottom.

According to the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, Vegas is the fastest growing city in the U.S. A record 29.6 million travelers visited Las Vegas in 1996. Players lose $6 billion a year at Las Vegas casinos alone. The entire U.S. gambling industry takes in $40 billion a year.

Think about this: $6 billion lost and 30 million visitors. Do the math.  The figures don’t lie and tell a grim story.

You_lose_The_Game

Jean Mikle for Asbury Park Press tells us how the people of Atlantic City, NJ, have fared since legalized gambling came to town.

* Population: 1970 (47,859), 2011 (39,558)
* Percentage Below Poverty Line: 1970 (22.5%), 2011 (29.3%)
* Median Household Income: Atlantic City:1970 ($4,257), 2011 ($28,526). Compare these stats to the average for the state of New Jersey: 1970 ($10,371), 2011 ($71,180)
* Violent Crime Rate Per 1,000 Residents: Atlantic City 2011 (19.2%), New Jersey (3.1%)

suffer

The Lure of Easy Money

These statistics clearly indicate, in the decades since gambling was legalized, the residents of Atlantic City have suffered. And there’s more.  About 1 out of every 50 neighbors in Atlantic City are violent felons. One house in ten poses the threat of a major crime scene. In New Jersey overall, the ratio is about 1 in 300.

Atlantic City hasn’t been hit with a tsunami or a Hurricane Katrina. It was assaulted by an army of gamblers drawn by the big payoff that never came. An army of stumbling, disappointed, angry patrons, who counted on a fair shake and a square deal  It never came. Why?  Because the House always wins. Always.

If this sounds too familiar, it might be time to enter gambler’s rehab and gain some stability in your life and finances. You can begin the check-in process by clicking at this site.

Stay with it, and you’ll find enough help here to keep you out of the cold for the rest of your life.

Eating Gambling Addicts for Breakfast in the Twilight Zone

By: Scott McAdams

Please allow me to recommend “A Nice Place To Visit” (Twilight Zone, 1959). This story strikes deserved fear in the hearts of gamblers, scammers, gamers, con-artists, swindlers, “artful dodgers,” and grifters. You feel you’ve now entered the cream of society, but you soon find it’s actually much like quicksand.

A_twilight zone

An empty man tries to fill the void with the thrill of winning, bacchanalia (ex.: sex and food orgies), and the pursuit of unchecked wealth and power. He gets “help,” of a sort, from an odd character (Sebastion Cabot) , a rather “cool” host who revels in this indebted gambler’s shamelessness.

This jovial grandfatherly character easily devours gamblers for breakfast, as we have unwisely welcomed him in. Gambling, we’re an easy meal for a perpetually ravaging “host.” We’re fodder for his independence day bash. Can it get worse? Of course. We’re not at the top of the food chain at this table. All addicts, gambler or not, eventually face a similar scenario. You do not want to keep going there.

You can stay off his radar entirely by avoiding wasteful habits. This will also empower you and protect you from the threat of dissolution and financial ruin.

Additionally, you will have learned responsible money-management strategies during the time you’d have otherwise wasted on the horrendous plan our unscrupulous “host” had laid out just for you.

Back in reality, let’s consider the State Lottery. Your chances of losing are astronomically good.

If you simply must gamble in this way, consider your losses a donation to worthwhile state programs. Let’s remember, however, that experience has shown you that
you simply must not gamble.

You may donate to state programs elsewhere. In fact, you have many viable alternatives. Choose them wisely and conservatively. You, and how you spend your time and money, matter.

Leo Tolstoy said, “A Gentleman is a man who will pay his gambling debts even when he knows he has been cheated.”

This makes sense only if everyone acknowledges that everyone else is also a cheater, a most cynical perspective. Gentlemen don’t cheat. Neither, Ladies. Babies don’t cheat (yet).

A_gambling

Does the indebted gambler invariably suffer a guilty conscience? If not, why not? You’ve done some wrong, pal. You’ve likely been trading financial stability for yourself and your family for quick kicks and ready cash.

How, then, do you stay in touch with your conscience and responsibilities?

Does something nag at you while you’re frivolously throwing away your savings on bets? It’s that pesky conscience, again.

There’s absolutely nothing the slightest bit funny or entertaining in addictions of any kind, including your reliance on gambling. They promise life-shattering and potentially lethal consequences.

If you suffer from a gambling obsession or compulsion, you will find that the serious help you require is available to you by clicking on this site.

Problem Gambling, Facts or Fiction?  NO JUST PLAIN FACTS!

By Renee Siegel

Facts 1-12

1.) Substance Abusers get high from a mood-altering drug. Problem gamblers get high from the anticipated action or the action itself of placing a bet or making a wager. Gambling is still an addiction.

2.) Although it would seem like there are no withdrawal symptoms from problem gambling, there are many. These include anxiety, depression and many others.

3.) Although most people can gamble responsibly, about 2-5% of the general population cannot, and they have some degree of problem gambling.

Problem Gambling, Facts or Fiction? NO JUST PLAIN FACTS!

4.) Problem gambling affects family members in ways that alcoholism and other drug addiction do not. There are financial implications for the spouse and other family members that become legal implications for the family if the debt is shared or not paid.

5.) Family members need help, too. They need to be aware of the fact that the gambler, like the alcoholic or drug addict does not gamble to hurt them.

6.) Many problem gamblers have other addiction concerns, substance and sexual addiction being the top two.

7.) Without a clear understanding of addictions, all addicts are likely to trade or switch addictions sometime in their lives.

8.) The fastest two populations of problem gamblers in the US are elderly women, above 55 years and adolescent males transitioning into adulthood.

9.) There are two types of gambling: “action” or “skill” gambling and “escape” or “luck” gambling. Action or skill gamblers wager on sports, craps, horse racing, 21, etc.  Escape gamblers play slots, bingo, buy scratchers, etc…

10.) It used to be that action gamblers were mostly male, and escape gamblers were mostly female. Although that is still mostly true, there are more female action gamblers and more male escape gamblers today.

Problem Gambling, Facts or Fiction? NO JUST PLAIN FACTS!

11.) Money is the drug for a compulsive gambler, like alcohol is the drug for the alcoholic or heroin is the drug for a heroin addict.

12.) Bailing out the gambler (paying their debts) is like enabling the alcoholic or drug addict.

What Happens In Vegas Stays With You for the Rest of Your Life

By: Scott McAdams

Paul Newman on gambling: “If you’re playing a poker game and you look around the table and can’t tell who the sucker is, it’s you.”

SFYB_Paul newman

Thank you , Paul. I’m going with Butch on this one. Why so? Mucho experience in losing a fortune playing high-risk games. Taking wild risks with scant hope of success. Gaming endlessly. Navigating life with blinders on, the scales of justice ominously tipped against you.
Hey, “Hombre,” it’s time to face the music – you’ve been “playing the fool” with your money, again and again. The roller coaster you’re on is now out of control (too many ups and downs). How can I get off of this thing?

1.: Stay off of “roller-coasters” of this kind (they’re not safe),
2.: Give up on shaky investments such as gaming (also unsafe).

There are much safer and wiser ways to invest your valuable time and funds than in the sparkling illusions of the gaming tables.

Take your life on its newly cleared path, and don’t look back. This will require a manageable itinerary (your future, spelled out) and the will to follow it.

You’ll need help with some of the directions. After all, you have an unlimited number of possible destinations. Help arrives in the form of professionals in the field of addictive behaviors. Their job is to put you on the bus, not under it. They do it with the benefits of natural talents, study, experience, and hard-earned expertise. Why take advantage of this opportunity? To avoid scenarios such as the following:

The average trip to Las Vegas proceeds in a fashion similar to that of my own. We arrive flush-faced and full of the gambler’s naive expectation of the easy score.

blink

No one had advertised the menacing goon squad surrounding you as they stealthily troll for cheaters. A trip to the security office loomed on the murky horizon. I had been politely asking big rollers for some of their stash, as in, “…spare 1 or 2 of them there $500 chips, pardner?” The result? Predictable. Expulsion and banishment. The charge? “No vagrants allowed.” Our next casino, we surmise, is coming right up.

Wrong. By now, they’re waiting for us on the strip. Management “talk among themselves,” and we’re quickly escorted out of each ventured establishment. Our money was just no good there. Even so, I’d craftily managed to blow most of my meager wad by morning. Lady luck proved a fickle and elusive partner, providing the feeling that if “it wasn’t for bad luck, there wouldn’t be any luck at all.” If you see this particular lady approaching, run.

big blink

The Vegas morning-after hangover was full of nasty little surprises. After several posh $.99 breakfasts at roadside dives, but no money for the nerve-shattering mini-slot machines on every table, girlfriend laughingly roared away with the nearest truck-driver she could find. I’d finally discovered the bottom rung for modern humans. Dead broke and thirsty in the desert, 1000 miles from home. Lost girlfriend. Lost money. Las Vegas? They never treated Elvis like that! What’s next, “Sorry, son, you’ll need $.25 if you want to use the john?” Can it get much worse than this?

SFYB_psych brain

It had become past time to go home and clean up, big-time. The first step is a no-brainer. Re-prioritize (i.e.,”keep your day job,” “save your marriage,” etc.).

Before tackling that job, however, a full recovery required considerable help from friends old and new, as it will in your own process of recovery.

That’s why we’re here. Click at this site, and break the gambling habit with help from certified leaders in the field. You will find that they make excellent guides, Amigo.

Can Gambling Really Become a Problem?

By: Renee Siegel

How can you tell if you have a gambling problem? That can be a tough question, whether you are the gambler or someone on the outside looking in.

You can’t smell a gambling problem or see someone staggering from too much gambling. You don’t need to take car keys away, because the gambler is too impaired to drive. Problem gamblers can generally walk a straight line and touch their noses if asked. Sometimes they even win and walk away with the money. This just convinces them (or those around them) that they are the smartest or luckiest people in the world, and everything they touch turns to gold.

Can Gambling Really Become a Problem?

It’s socially acceptable to gamble, too. You go out for recreation and put a few pennies or nickels or even dimes and quarters into a slot machine. What could be the harm in that? It’s like using spare change for a little entertainment. Even the food at a casino is pretty darn good.

And then there are those gaming promos. The free bus rides to the casino, tickets to the shows, free meals, free hotel rooms, and countless other incentives to just come in and have some fun.

Where else can an older woman be dropped off in front of a building, and after a night of entertainment a valet takes her to her car? She feels safe after a night out, even if she didn’t say a word to her neighbor sitting at the next machine.

Casino nights are the most popular event at graduations. This is a relatively new invention to keep newly graduated seniors safe from drinking and driving after the graduation ceremony. The senior is dropped off at the venue or the high school gymnasium is turned into a fantasy party featuring varied casino games and arcades.

Can Gambling Really Become a Problem? There are gambling venues and games for everyone. You can play an innocent game of bingo. Hey, even churches and synagogues offer bingo for recreation or as a fundraiser. These same institutions hold casino nights to raise money for good causes. And for most of the participants, it is just recreation and a good time.

But not for everyone. You know who you are. Can gambling really become a problem? It seems so innocent, and everyone is doing it. Hey, it’s just fun and games, right? Not always. Not for everyone.

Need some help?

Know When To Fold ‘Em

By: Scott McAdams

Having second thoughts about your love affair with gambling? Maybe you should.

Know When To Fold 'Em

According to Stevenson Day, “In the early sixteenth century, the Spanish chronicler Fray Diego Durán reported on Aztec ballgames: ‘They . . . gambled their homes, their corn granaries, their maguey plants. They sold their children in order to bet and even staked themselves and became slaves to be sacrificed later if they were not ransomed’ ”

That’s harsh. Just 300 years later the effects of gambling hadn’t improved at all. They never do.

In the “History of Gambling,” we learn: “…the Grimaldis sold a concession for gaming in an attempt to keep their principality, Monaco, from going bankrupt. Monte Carlo was opened in 1858 by gambling operators who had been forced to leave Hamburg, Germany after popular opinion turned against gambling. The public disfavor in Germany occurred because of the charge that legalized gaming was turning the city into a nest of paupers.”

Become a slave? Bankrupt your city? Who needs this?

Slave (1)

Perhaps most people could modestly engage in friendly wagering and emerge unscathed.  However, the gambling addict possesses no such immunity from harm. He approaches life like the alcoholic, tempting chance with one foot in the bar.

The prestigious Mayo Clinic reports, “Compulsive gambling, also called gambling disorder, is the uncontrollable urge to keep gambling despite the toll it takes on your life. Gambling means that you’re willing to risk something you value in the hope of getting something of even greater value. Gambling can stimulate the brain’s reward system much like drugs such as alcohol can, leading to addiction. If you’re prone to compulsive gambling, you may continually chase bets, hide your behavior, deplete savings, accumulate debt, or even resort to theft or fraud to support your addiction. Compulsive gambling is a serious condition that can destroy lives. Although treating compulsive gambling can be challenging, many compulsive gamblers have found help through professional treatment.”

gambler-table

The lure of uncertainty is deceptive and powerful. “Lure” is defined by Webster’s Dictionary as “a certified fake promise guaranteed to deceive.”

In effect, the “house” is tricking you, reeling you in, and eating you alive. The fix is in, and there seems no way to win. What can you do about it?

Endeavor to transform uncertainty into stability. Ensure your financial health and your peace of mind by enlisting the aid of professionals in the battle against this disease.

This will require your cooperation. We won’t promise you a rose garden. However, you will find all the help you need at this site to plant and nurture the seeds that become your freedom from the lure of gambling.
