MISCONCEPTIONS OF SOBER LIVING HOMESsober home

1. THEY ARE ALL IN BAD NEIGHBORHOODS
Robert Henslee

SFYB Founder

While sober livings can range in locations usually matching an individuals budget, they are not all in bad neighborhoods. Some do resemble the dark and dilapidated areas addicts turn to when they are getting high but the majority are in stable and comfortable areas. People may be surprised when driving through nicer communities in their local town to learn that the well kept home down the street actually houses a group of men or women looking to better their lives.

2. THE HOMES ARE RUN DOWN & BADLY MAINTAINED

This goes hand-in-hand with the idea that the homes are in questionable neighborhoods. The aim of any reputable sober living home is to provide the same or better quality and comfort than the addict had at home. Imagine trying to begin a new chapter in your life and better yourself only to call a place home that resembles the condemned house that you used to pick up your drugs. For this reason and many more, sober living homes make it a special point to provide homes with amenities and creature comforts found
in higher end homes today. It is not uncommon to be greeted by hardwood floors, Travertine tile, marble counter tops, and plush leather furnishings.

MISCONCEPTIONS OF SOBER LIVING HOMES Click to Tweet
3. SOBER LIVING IS NOT NECESSARILY A TREATMENT

On the contrary, sober living is one of the few ways to set up an individual in recovery for success. It is still up to the individual to do the leg work, but sober livings provide the stable and structured environment one needs to successfully transition back into their day-to-day life. While a 30, 60, or 90 inpatient program would represent the triage and emergency services a
patient would receive after a horrible accident. Sober living is akin to the follow up visits and continuing care after a patient has been stabilized. A sober home allows men and women who are still in a critical early point of recovery to rejoin life while still having the accountability needed for long term success.

4. THEY ARE UNREGULATED

Many people believe that sober living homes are unregulated, or even worse, fraudulent money making schemes. While a simple Google search can reveal the dark side of “sober livings.” It is important to remember that the true facilities are operating to help those suffering from addiction. Yes, they are businesses and need to make a profit to continue to help the future recovering alcoholics and addicts, but they do not do so at the sake of their current clients. Sober homes, depending upon the state they lie in, are subject to regulations, through zoning laws, state housing departments, state and municipal healthcare regulations and regulation specific to sober living communities and homes. While it would be nice to say every home is operating for benevolent reasons it is important to research the home your loved one chooses to continue their journey in sobriety. The best place to start is the inpatient treatment facility where your loved one is currently undergoing treatment; the counselors and staff will know which places have good or poor reputations.

5. THEY ARE HAVENS FOR CONTINUED DRUG USE

Like most things in life you get what you pay for. If it is cheap, it is cheap for a reason. A sober living is exactly that; a home where each of clients is guaranteed to be able to come home and not be tempted by the same environment they had just left. Each home has their own rules for what happens in the event of relapse and be sure to discuss this with the director of the home. Rules can vary from speaking with their counselor to ensure it does not happen again, to being asked to leave the home temporarily until
the individual is able to test clean of all drugs, to asking any individual to leave the home in the event of any drug use. Companies that have been in business even for a short time will have seen cases of relapse and will have plans to handle each case accordingly.

More importantly, if a sober living has a good reputation, it enjoys it for a reason. They have built it over time and through the ability to foster success stories. They work with people from all socioeconomic backgrounds in the toughest and most mentally challenging moments of their lives to show them a better way to live. One of the reason they are so successful is because the
best homes are truly that.. a safe home for your loved one.

How Have I Made It This Far?I Refused

Raymond Kyle

Founder Warrior Foundation.

For many of us our past at times may have made us wonder how we are still alive today? Well I will tell you how….by the grace of God!

We all have done things in our lives or put ourselves in situations that it’s a miracle we made it out of. For some of us like myself it seemed to become and everyday thing. We would willingly put ourselves out there not caring what the outcome would be. Escaping death for the first time was scary but then it no longer became a fear it became who we were.

You may ask why God would save us time and time again when we didn’t even attempt to save ourselves. Why would he save us and not the ones who died doing the same things we were? Well all I can say is its by his grace we are here today! His mercy and his love is what has gotten us to this point in our lives.

How Have I Made It This Far? Click to Tweet

He is a father to us all so therefore he protects his children. If you are one of us blessed children of God that has lived the life of addiction and crime then you are here still cause you have a purpose that you need to fulfill. So to you I say quit asking why you are here and start asking how do I fulfill my purpose. God has a plan and it’s up to us to fulfill than plan. God bless you!

Process

Recovery is a processProcess

Just like any other process in our lives it takes time. This is not a quick fix for all our problems, it’s a day by day process where we simply try to be better today than we were the day before if we happen to be so blessed to see it.
Raymond Kyle

Founder Warrior Foundation.

Alot of times in this process, individuals tend to want to rush, like there is some kind of race with a prize for who gets there first. Well, sorry to bust your bubble but whether you get there first or you get there last,we are all winners. We a get the same prize, LIFE!
There is no need to rush, enjoy this beautiful journey. Take it all in, don’t skip the hard part’s. The struggles in this process is where we are created, this is where we are learning to tap into who we truly are. Just slow down and relax.

You don’t have to move mountains every day. You don’t have to hurry up and get to a certain point. Take your time, and enjoy this journey. When we rush is where we are more likely to make mistakes. If we allow down and pay attention then we are better able to get out of this process and out of life what we not only need but what we deserve as well.

Recovery is a process Click to Tweet

I challenge you today, as I do myself to slow down. Take this magical journey into the deepest darkest parts of your soul and allow it to do the work it needs to do. Enjoy being you, enjoying the progress even if it’s minimal, enjoy it. This process works if you work it and will allow it to work in your life. Remember you cannot rush greatness, and you my friends are great. God bless you and have an amazing day.

IS AA/NA THE ONLY WAY TO RECOVER?aa-chip

There seems to be an ongoing debate as to whether or not and individual can truly recover from addiction without following the 12 steps and the AA/NA program?

Let me begin by saying this, AA/NA has worked for millions of people for many many years, and it will continue to do so for years to come. The guidelines and principals taught in these programs can be very helpful in recovery, so I do believe the foundation of AA/NA is amazing.

Raymond Kyle

Founder Warrior Foundation.

But, yes there is a but, I very firmly believe in what works for one person may not necessarily work for the next. We as individuals are all made differently in so many ways. So it’s safe to say one program is not gonna work for everybody.

In today’s society it is becoming more and more often you hear of these amazing stories of recovery from individuals who work their own program their own way and are doing an amazing job.
There is no right or wrong way to recover. Long as you are moving forward, and are getting better in life then keep doing what you are doing.

IS AA/NA THE ONLY WAY TO RECOVER? Click to Tweet

Don’t ever let anybody tell you that you are doing it wrong cause there is no right or wrong way. Recovery is simply about living life on life’s terms and we each lead a different life.I will end with this! This should not even be a debate. We should all encourage and lift up each other no matter what program works for us. We are in this together and we will win, cause we do recover.

Tap Into You – Do You Believe???????

How many times in our lives have we not done something simply because we didn’t believe in ourselves, simply because we didn’t think we were deserving or worthy, simply because we was afraid that we would fail?

Raymond Kyle

Founder Warrior Foundation.

The answer to that question is easy, too many times we have used these excuses to avoid doing something cause of fear, doubt, or uncertainty. The thought of failure for many of us is a looming distraction that ultimately keeps us from achieving the greatness that each one of us was created to be.

Tap Into You - Do You Believe Click to Tweet

We cannot tap into our full potential and we cannot be the Kings and Queens we were created to be by continuing to allow society, or another individual to tell us who we are and what we can or cannot do. We must face our fears, no matter how hard it may be it’s vital to our growth. We must overcome the doubt, and stop putting limits on ourselves and what we are capable of. We must quit allowing outside forces to define who we are, we are good enough, smart enough, pretty enough, and deserving of the life we are striving to live.

It is my challenge to you to begin tapping into your full potential each and every day. Show no mercy. Hold back nothing. Step into greatness where you were born to be. God bless you my friends.

A Journey Through My Mind

journey-through-my-mind

Raymond Kyle

Founder Warrior Foundation.

Allow me to take you on a journey thru my mind, a place many have wanted to go, some have had the chance, and very few could actually handle. Let me take you to a place that’s unknown to your eyes, but once you open them and I mean open them from your soul, then I can show you a world that you would soon learn to love, if only you was to give it a chance.

.
A Journey Through My Mind Click to Tweet

See my mind runs a hundred miles an hour, always thinking of ways to be different and unique, showing my intellect and intelligence, and inspiration to those who may need me. That is what makes me who I am and that is why I am so proud of who I am. My story is a story that is told by he that lives within my soul, he that was once so lonely and lost by his own mistakes and choices.

Llanwrst, Conwy, Wales

But now he has opened his eyes to his soul to see the beauty that lies within and has come to understand the greatness he was blessed with from his birth. He has let his flowers blossom instead of pulling his mind and body and soul with things of the world that for so long controlled who he was. Over time he has become a better man, a man that he can be proud of, the man he was so intended to be. Every day still working on his life and on his self to be better and to do better with his life.

in-the-end-we-only-regret-the-chances-we-didnt-take1

So do you understand what I am saying? We all take chances in life, we all make mistakes. Sometimes before we know it we are blinded by our own self, trying to understand life and our reason for living.

Nobody controls our destiny in this world but ourselves. Life is what we make it by the choice we each choose to make. Every choice has consequences and repercussions no matter good or bad. We all must answer for the choices we choose to make and be held accountable. None of us is perfect, and we never will be, but we must all strive to be better and learn from our mistakes. Sometimes you may end up paying for choices we made for the rest of our live, but that does not mean that we cannot keep bettering ourselves or helping others better themselves for true LOVE has no limits.

We all can make a list of reasons we could give up, but many of us choose not to. Why? Cause we all have more reasons not too. Life is sometimes hard, this I do know all too well. I also know that it will probably get worse before It gets better, but I know that each one of us is capable of fighting thru all ND making it thru.

sorry

Today you stop feeling sorry for yourself, you stand up, you shake it off and you decide that you are going to be the man and woman, the king and queen that you know you are. Don’t give up and waste your life. Love yourself, love yourself enough to help yourself and to make the right choices in life. Ladies you are a queen and a queen you shall always be. Men, you are kings and kings you shall always be. Claim it, live it, love it.

Just remember when life throws you a loop and it seems like nobody loves you or cares God does and I do. God loves us every day, all day, every second or every day. He never takes a day off. God bless you as you continue your journey.

Top 5 Sober Living Criteria In South Florida.

Sober Living plays a critical role in the recovery process. Individuals that decide to drive the road to recovery encounter may detours and obstacles that can sidetrack their recovery. While there are many choices of sober living home, you’ll want to make sure the home you choose offers the highest level of care, qualities, and features that foster total support for your recovery success.

There are two important ways the addiction treatment industry are running toward to improve outcomes. These include JACHO certification for treatment centers, and NARR (South Florida Affiliate FARR) for sober living residences.

For future updates and more discussion on this topic please join our FaceBook Group by clicking on image below.

South Florida has the national reputation of being the “Wild, Wild, West”. The corruption and unethical practices is widespread. Many of the good treatment Centers in Florida are trying to obtain JACHO Certification which shows the professional community and individuals seeking treatment that this is the highest quality level of care you can get. JACHO has the highest set of standards, regulations, and protocols that are far above organizations that do not have this certification.

FARR2
The good Sober Living facilities are also concerned with having a higher level of care including a set of regulations that say this is the best level of care during your transition from treatment. That transition also goes the other way by being able to get back in mainstream society. In South Florida, if a sober living has the FARR certification you have the confidence that you are receiving the best possible treatment that sober living’s can provide.

When you decide to get clean and sober you need to have the best possible level of care in treatment and in sober living. You are setting up the foundation for your life long journey of sobriety. When you first decide to start your recovery journey, you are scared, confused, and over whelmed. You need to have the confidence that your treatment and sober living choices give you the necessary tools, highest quality of treatment and assists in your recovery process.

Once you find a well-qualified treatment center that fits your individual need, you will be basically inside a bubble and exposed to that facilities best options for your treatment plan. While you are in treatment you need to start planning for your second phase which is sober living.

fbi 4Again the choices will be over-whelming and some treatment centers will bait you with ‘FREE Rent” to go to the facility they recommend. That facility is usually owned by the treatment center as a LLC, or DBA, or receiving a kick back from the sober living facility. This is considered patient brokering and is illegal. There are so many illegal dealings in addiction treatment in South Florida that there is an FBI task force stationed in South Florida to clean this and several other bad practices that exist there.

findingTheRightFitFinding the Right Sober Living House
Sober living facilities are needed to provide a supporting and pro-active healthy transition, allowing you to leave the safety of rehab and enter a less-restrictive living environment while maintaining a focus on recovery. Residents enjoy a less structured atmosphere while developing the tools and skills to sustain sobriety in the “real world.”

While there are many sober living facilities in Florida, you need to make sure the home you choose offers the highest level of care, qualities, and features that support recovery. You should never commit to living at a sober living home without visiting and talking with the owners and residents.

Here are the top five qualities you’ll want to look for in a sober living house:

#1 FARR Certified Residence

Picking a FARR certified residence guarantees that you are in the best possible environment that is regulated with the highest standards. This is a critical decision that affects your recovery. You are faced with an overwhelming amount of decisions each day; many affect your sobriety. You need to know the sober living has a proven structure to assist and support recovery. That’s why it’s so important to find a sober living home that implements a higher level of care…it should also implement rules and regulations, such as mandated curfews and a zero-tolerance drug-free environment.

#2 Safety

Being in a safe environment is an absolute necessity. Look for things like; 24/7 staff, if the entire staff is trained in CPR, do they have an emergency kit in case of an overdose, and a protocol for emergencies. What steps and measures do they have to absolutely make sure there are no drugs or alcohol on the premises? Is there a zero tolerance for possession and use of alcohol and drugs? Check out and speak to the people currently living in a sober living facility. Ask them about the technology and safety measures used by the facility.

#3 Connecting Atmosphere

The camaraderie, atmosphere, mood, energy, and vibe at the sober living house with its current residents are very important. During your tour ask to speak with the current residents, they will be valuable in your decision to pick the right place for you. What types of activities are there to help you develop new skills; assistance with job search, better eating habits, health and fitness. Make sure you feel a positive vibe; your gut will tell you if it is the right place for you.

#4 Supports and Assists Recovery

A solid support system is crucial for anyone in recovery. 12 step recovery is not for everyone, however the sober living should have other actions on and off the property in place like; relapse prevention, AA, NA, and counseling to assist you in recovery. When evaluating a sober living support team, it’s important to find a staff that truly cares about you and your success…but you also want a staff that’s unafraid to enforce necessary rules and regulations.

Everyone’s recovery path is different and proceeds at different paces, however individualized recovery plans are essential for staying sober. The employees should be professional, and be there to keep you on the road to recovery. They should be encouraging 12 step, AA, NA meetings or a support system that fosters sobriety. There should also be some sort of drug testing policy in effect.

#5 Take Responsibility; Own It

Remember, you must own your sobriety. That means that you may not always like following rules and regulations like a curfew, structured events, meetings, etc. You must be willing to do the difficult things to maintain sobriety. The sober living home should challenge you to be able to make that step to be fully functional on your own.

good-advice-26790031You can be confident that if the sober living is certified by FARR that the above are addressed completely by the sober living facility.
